Match preview: Brentford B vs Rangers

Scottish giants visit Jersey Road this afternoon

1 October 2017

Rangers Development Squad are set to play at Jersey Road later this afternoon, a 3pm kick-off at The Bees' training ground in West London.

The visitors to London are part of the Rangers youth setup, the highest level of which played in the SPFL Development League until this season. While still contending the Scottish Challenge Cup, the Rangers Development Squad have withdrawn from a league system, opting instead to play a variety of teams from across Britain as well as professional sides from the Scottish league system.

Head of Academy at Rangers, Craig Mulholland told the Club's website in May“we will create a games programme where we will play the best clubs in England and the best clubs in Europe and it’s really designed to deal with the transition from the under-17s through to the first team.

"It’s a massive issue for Scottish football but we are excited with this. It’s something we have been working on for well over a year and we hope this club are leading the way in terms of player development at that age and stage."

So Kevin O'Connor's side will meet a team comprising of several older players with First Team experience as well as some of the younger candidates from the Academy teams.

The former Brentford captain's side will include more names who have been involved in the First Team at Griffin Park. In recent weeks the side have seen Ilias Chatzitheodoridis, Theo Archibald and Mads Bech Sørensen appear on the team sheet for Dean Smith. All three will return to Jersey Road this afternoon after travelling to Middlesbrough with Brentford yesterday.

Henrik Johansson and Reece Cole are missing through injury, however Zain Westbrooke has returned from his loan spell at Solihull Moors and is available for selection.

Today's match will be a tough test for the young Bees but one that should make for an entertaining end to the match schedule before the international break next week.

You can catch all the action via live updates on Twitter @brentfordfc and there will be a match report on brentfordfc.com following the game. As usual, iFollow will bring you match reaction from Kevin O'Connor and one or more of his squad after the final whistle.

Match Report: Brentford B 2 Rangers Dev 5

Kenny Miller appears at Jersey Road in Rangers' win over Brentford B

1 October 2017

Brentford B lost 5-2 to a strong Rangers side at Jersey Road on Sunday afternoon. Theo Archibald and Bradley Clayton scored the goals for The Bees but their opponents proved too strong in the end.

It took 25 minutes for the away side to break the deadlock, Ryan Hardie getting on the end of a Myles Beerman through ball to slot the ball home from the left side of the penalty area.

Dalcio could have added to the scoreline shortly after but Ellery Balcombe made a strong save to deny him from the edge of the box.

Herson Alves and Zain Westbrooke then both had shots deflected that spun narrowly wide of the target. Alves had cut inside from the left before drilling his to the near post, it bounced off two players before dribbling wide. Westbrooke's was more powerful, heading for goal until a last ditch block by a Rangers defender.

The visitors made it 2-0 after 39 minutes, Aaron Nemane making a goal for himself. Running almost the length of the pitch on the counter-attack, he cut inside from the left and hit the ball low into the bottom corner of the net.

In added time at the end of the half, Rangers made it three. James Barjonas played a neat one-two on the edge of the box before curling his shot in off the left post to end the half in full control.

After the break, it took just five minutes for Kevin O'Connor's side to get back into the game. Bradley Clayton struck a volley into the net after Herson Alves had nodded the ball down to him inside the area.

Rangers then made the game safe with two goals at the other end by the same man. Hardie netted himself a hat-trick, the first goal coming from the left side and ending with him tucking the ball away beneath the onrushing Balcombe. His third was the hardest of the lot, hitting the target from a very narrow angle and somehow seeing the ball squirm its way into the net from the right byline.

Sub Raphael Assibey-Mensah saw a chance go begging in the 66th minute, his cross found Clayton in the box but the latter couldn't get enough accuracy on it and it sailed wide.

The remaining period of the game was full of changes and a few yellow cards were handed out on either side as the game went on. It was with one of the last kicks of the game that Archibald got himself on the scoresheet. The former Celtic youngster finding time in the box to knock the ball past Liam Kelly, that after great work from substitute Joe Hardy to win the ball back.
