B Team face Royals today

14 November 2017

Kevin O'Connor takes his Brentford B side to face Reading U23, a 1pm kick-off at Reading's Hogwood Park Training Ground.

This is the B Team's first official fixture since they returned from Italy on Wednesday 25 October. The last time these two sides met at this venue, Reading were defeated 2-1 by a Bees team that included Alan McCormack and Josh Clarke.

Zain Westbrooke and Reece Cole scored the goals that day, however both are missing from the squad today. Zain is on loan at Leyton Orient, while Reece is recovering from an injury he sustained during his own loan spell at Newport County. Also missing today will be Henrik Johansson, who sustained his long-term injury while playing in that match on 1 February this calendar year.

Marcus Forss has been out recently with his own knock, he could return to the side in some capacity this afternoon. This match is also an opportunity for Kevin O'Connor to use players like Justin Shaibu and Ilias Chatzitheodoridis. Both have been involved in the First Team recently, both could benefit from minutes in this match.

Overall, this will be the third time Brentford B have played Reading since their inaugral season last year. The first meeting between the two sides came in October 2016 at Jersey Road. That day, Raphael Assibey-Mensah struck a hat-trick on the way to a 4-1 win at home.

Report: Reading 1 Brentford B 3

Bees victorious at Hogwood Park

14 November 2017

Brentford B returned to action with a 3-1 victory over Reading on Tuesday afternoon (14 November).

The visitors fell behind early in the first period, but goals from Lewis Macleod, Herson Alves and substitute Raphael Assibey-Mensah completed an impressive turnaround.

There was plenty of energy during the opening exchanges as both sides looked to put their stamp on the game.

Brentford worked their first chance of note with ten minutes on the clock; Justin Shaibu hugging the edge of The Royals' area before seeing his low drive palmed around the post.

Despite the positive start Kevin O'Connor's men found themselves behind following the next phase of play. A crisp passing move saw Reading work the ball in from the right with The Royals' number nine in the right place at the right time to poke home from close range.

The visitors responded well to falling behind and were back on level terms five minutes after conceding; Macleod turning home from inside the area after more positive play down the right-hand side.

It could have been two for Brentford and Macleod shortly after as the Reading keeper did well to save the midfielder's bending effort which looked destined for the bottom corner. The Scotsman saw a set-piece saved moments later as The Bees ramped up the pressure.

Bradley Clayton dipped a free-kick over the crossbar on the half-hour mark and Reading struck the side-netting as the sides exchanged blows during an end-to-end first period.

Brentford had two golden opportunities to head into the interval with the lead with both Adam Rooney and Alves lifting over the crossbar during the dying embers, before Reading's number eight fired straight into the hands of Luke Daniels having broken down the left.

Brentford looked lively following the resumption of play and made their pressure count on 49 minutes. Rooney's cross found Alves at the back stick who adjusted well to arrow across the keeper and into the bottom corner.

Reading came strong after falling behind with Daniels at his best on a number of occasions to keep The Bees' lead intact.

Clayton concluded a slick spell of possession by drilling into the side-netting during the final stages, before substitute Assibey-Mensah made sure of the victory; bursting through the middle before sliding into the far corner.

Subs not used: Hardy, Forster

Bees Scorers: Macleod (16), Alves (49), Assibey-Mensah (84)
