Match Preview: MSK Zilina U23 v Brentford B

13 July 2017

Brentford B play MSK Zilina U23 on Friday afternoon, kick-off 1pm local time, on day seven of their trip to Hungary.

The Bees take on the Slovak squad at the Globall Sport Training Centre in Telki, the same venue as their 4-0 win over ETO Gyor on Tuesday.

The 'Sosoni' play in the Slovak League, created in 1993, and won their seventh title last season. They are the second most successful team in the country. Their Under-23 setup play their football in Slovakia 2. Liga's West division.

Originally part of the Czechoslovak league, their greatest success came in 1961 when the team got to the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Known then as Dynamo Zilina, the team pushed Italian giants Fiorentina all the way across the two-legged encounter, winning the first 3-2 but losing the second by two without reply.

Kevin O'Connor spread the minutes throughout his team during Tuesday's opening fixture and will most likely do the same again on Friday afternoon. No new injury concerns have come forward from the last game, Henrik Johansson remains benched while he recovers from a summer surgery.

Fans can follow the game live on Brentford FC's twitter account @brentfordfc as well as the match centre on brentfordfc.com, where there will also be a full match report following the game.

Match Report: MSK Zilina 1 Brentford B 2

Bees continue pre-season with another win in Hungary

14 July 2017

Brentford B ended their time in Hungary with their second win of pre-season, a 2-1 victory over MSK Zilina U23.

Ali Coote and Theo Archibald were the scorers as Kevin O'Connor's side had to come from behind to win the game.

The match started slowly, with neither team looking to force anything dramatic in the opening stages.

The first chance came after 11 minutes for The Bees, Marcus Forss in behind the back four of Zilina. He took a touch to set himself and curled a shot with his right foot that missed the far post by a matter of inches as it rolled wide.

Zilina had two opportunities to get ahead soon after. Robert Polievka was the creator of both, first Lukas Janosik missing the target and then Samuel Mraz forcing a good save from Ellery Balcombe.

Archibald went close after half an hour with a shot that caught MSK's defence off guard. He took aim after cutting inside from the right wing but the ball fizzed past the post.

Zilina took the lead after a thunderous strike from Polievka. With 32 minutes gone he looked up and drove one from distance that cannoned into the net via the left post.

Five minutes later, the Slovak side had a goal disallowed. After celebrating nodding the ball home from a corner, Filip Kassa saw the assistant referee's flag was raised to indicate the ball had gone out and back in again from the set piece on the right wing.

Brentford were back in the game a few moments later. Bradley Clayton drove to the right byline before lifting a cross to the far post. There was Archibald to smash the ball into the roof of the net and level things up.

After a quick break at half time, The Bees took the advantage. Zain Westbrooke clipped the ball back for Coote to take aim and place into the top corner from close range. 2-1.

Zilina captain Michal Klec had a couple of chances to get his side back into contention as the game went on. The first was a deflected shot after an hour of football that caused Balcombe a bit of trouble on his six-yard box.

The next was a far post header that he connected with after Branislav Susolik swung in a cross from the right wing after 78 minutes. This time Balcombe was able to catch it cleanly.

With four minutes of normal time to go, Balcombe produced a brilliant save to deny David Halcko. The midfielder turned on the edge of the box and shot through a crowd of players, Balcombe got his hand up just in time to parry the shot away from danger.

The final chance came in the dying moments of the second half, Zilina pushing everything forward in the hope of getting an equaliser. Mraz popped up with a header at the far post that shaved the post on its way out of play.
