Match Preview: Brentford B vs AFC Bournemouth U23

Jersey Road to play host to B Team's first home match of the season

17 August 2017

Brentford B are set to play their first home friendly of the season at Jersey Road tomorrow, looking to make it eight wins from eight games in the early stages of 2017/18.

The Opposition

Bournemouth's youth setup plays football in The Central League, a system created in 1911 for English league reserve teams.

Last year, their South East division included AFC Wimbledon, Peterborough United and Southend United. They also faced teams from Exeter City, Cheltenham Town and Bristol Rovers.

Some of the squad have made professional debuts for the Club, including goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The 19-year-old started Bournemouth's 6-0 win over Leyton Orient in the FA Cup last term.

The Boss

Former Cherries player and Wales international Carl Fletcher is the Head Coach of AFC Bournemouth's youth squad.

Fletcher, 37, was a midfielder throughout his career and made over 400 apperarances in league football. The majority of his time was split between Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Plymouth Argyle.

In 2012, Fletcher retired from the game to focus on coaching but made a brief reapparance as a player for Barnet in the 2013/14 season. He has been part of the staff on the south coast since January 2014.

Brentford B

Brentford B are seven from seven so far this season, a 4-3 win over Everton U23 their most recent result.

Theo Archibald, Marcus Forss, Zain Westbrooke and Herson Alves scored on a rainy day in the North West.

Ellery Balcombe has been the undisputed first choice keeper so far this season, with Ilias Chatzitheodoridis the only outfield player getting more minutes than captain Zain Westbrooke for Kevin O'Connor's side.

Nine of the squad have scored this season, 21 goals as a team in total up to this point. Forss is the team's top marksman on five, Ali Coote following closely on four while Westbrooke and Archibald have three.

Henrik Johansson is still out with a leg injury and will miss the fixture. Midfielder Reece Cole left the Club on loan recently and is currently with Newport County of League Two.

Bees come away with another win after tough test at Jersey Road

18 August 2017

Brentford B beat AFC Bournemouth U23 2-0 at Jersey Road earlier today, Justin Shaibu and Herson Alves scoring the goals in the second half.

Kevin O'Connor set out a team that included Justin Shaibu and Ilias Chatzitheodoridis, both with First Team minutes under their belts. While The Cherries fielded the likes of Republic of Ireland international Marc Wilson and former Rangers midfielder Emerson Hyndman.

The Bees got their first chance in the opening minutes when Alves got in behind for a one-on-one, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale making a good save low to his left.

After quarter of an hour, Bradley Clayton had a similar chance when he latched on to Ilias Chatzitheodoridis' through ball on the left wing. The shot fizzed along the ground but was once again dealt with by Ramsdale.

Ali Coote snatched at a half-chance before the half-hour-mark that ended up going over the bar. Shortly afterwards, Bournemouth had their first real opening.

Mikael Ndjoli broke clear of the defence but Ellery Balcombe came out quickly to smother the ball. Minutes later, Alex Dobre saw his header crash off the crossbar and bounce away from danger.

After 34 minutes, Alves drilled a cross into the box and a combination of Shaibu and defender sent the ball goalwards. Ramsdale managed to get his body in the way and kept out the ball.

At the other end, Keelan O'Connell drove a cross towards the far post that forced Chris Mepham to slide in and get the ball off the line.

In the second half, Alves gave Bournemouth a warning before he struck the opening goal. Cutting in from the left, he hit the ball low but it cannoned back off the post. Just minutes later, he did the same only this time found the bottom corner.

The away side nearly had an instant response, getting down the other end to send a driven shot just over the crossbar.

With 65 minutes gone, Shaibu scored his goal. Mepham had met a corner with his head at the far post, Ramsdale parried it back out to him. The centre-back had a second attempt with his feet but again found Ramsdale in the way. This time the ball bounced to Shaibu and the striker smashed it into the roof of the net.

A minute later it could have been three. Raphael Assibey-Mensah broke clear of the last defender to run at goal. His attempted finish was saved at full stretch by Ramsdale.

Brentford had two further openings to get more goals. Both came from Coote, the first a cross that was cut out in mid-air and the second a shot that was gathered after coming through a crowd of players.
