Match Preview: Braga B vs Brentford B

Kevin O'Connor's side prepare to take on first Portuguese opponents

17 April 2018

Brentford B head to Portuguese LigaPro side SC Braga B on Wednesday afternoon at Braga Academia, a 4pm kick-off and the first of two matches in Portugal.

Game number 39 of the B Team season, excluding behind closed doors friendlies, could see Brentford extend their winning run to eight successive games. They face opponents from Portugal's second tier, as B teams from this country play in the senior men's divisions.

Last week, The Bees saw off Anderlecht at Griffin Park 4-0. Bradley Clayton scored a brace as Reece Cole and Nikolaj Kirk also netted in front of over 560 fans in TW8.

The last time Brentford B visited Portugal, they emerged 6-0 winners over Benfica B and will be hoping for a similar performance this time round.

Feature Interview

B Team Head Coach Kevin O'Connor mentioned the trip in his post-match comments after victory on Friday evening.

He said: "We're in a really good vein of form. We've got to keep carrying it on into every game. I keep telling the boys now, the same things, do the basics and the horrible side of the game really well. Then the quality on the ball will show."

His full chat can be read online now.

Player Stats

Swedish forward Henrik Johansson will miss the remaining four games of the season with an injury. Joe Hardy and David Titov both missed the Anderlecht match but could return to the lineup in time for this fixture.

Reece Cole continued his work at the top of the form guide with a goal against the Belgians on Friday night. Fellow Bee Bradley Clayton moved his goal tally to 10 this season with a brace on the same evening. Nikolaj Kirk's goal was his first of the season and his first for Brentford B.

Lukas Talbro and Reece Cole returned to the starting XI for Friday's game having missed out on starts against Shanghai. Bradley Clayton meanwhile added to his tally of 37 appearances this season when he netted two in last week's win.

Goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe made his 50th appearance for the B Team by starting against Anderlecht, while Marcus Forss and Nikolaj Kirk notched up number 30 for themselves. Jarvis Edobor still leads this ranking on 67 total apps, Lukas Talbro just behind on 66. Raphael Assibey-Mensah could be the next player to cross the 60 mark, he is on 59.

Marcus Forss became the B Team's all-time leading scorer when he hit 17 earlier this year, edging ahead of Herson Rodrigues Alves on 16. Reece Cole now has 15 to speak of, while Bradley Clayton and Theo Archibald are the next closest on 13.

Match Report: Braga B 1 Brentford B 0

Bees beaten in first game of Portugal tour

18 April 2018

Brentford B lost 1-0 to Braga B on Wednesday afternoon in Portugal, Bruno Wilson scoring the only goal for the home side in the first half.

The game started with both sides getting chances. The first fell the way of Braga, who managed to get a header in deep in Brentford box. Luckily for The Bees, it dropped over the crossbar.

Next Ali Coote thought he'd scored when he struck a low effort on target in the penalty area. It was blocked on the line by a defender as goalkeeper Felipe Ferrera watched on.

Brentford keeper Ellery Balcombe had to keep his eye on the shot from Felipe Villagrán soon after. Hit from distance, it swerved in the air before dipping just over the away side's bar.

Braga took the lead through defender Bruno Wilson after 18 minutes. A free-kick taken straight off the training ground allowed Braga a shot through a crowd of bodies. Balcombe only saw it late but made a reaction stop. The ball dropped kindly for the home side though, and Bruno tucked it home.

A few minutes later, Brentford struck the post through Theo Archibald. Collecting a ball in from the wing by Bradley Clayton, he turned on to his left foot and hit one low. It beat the keeper but hit the right post and bounced away from danger.

After 27 minutes it looked like the away side would draw level when Marcus Forss went clear one-on-one. Goalkeeper Ferrera raced out to meet him and the forward looked caught in two minds. His resulting shot wasn't quite powerful enough to get past the stopper and it remained one-nil.

José Denisson then went close for the hosts. Breaking clear on the left he shuffled the ball inside via his right foot before switching back to his left and shooting. The shot found the side-netting and may have clipped the post on its way.

The rest of the first half became very slow in midfield with neither side creating too much in the way of clear cut chances.

The second half was much of the same. Balcombe was forced into two good saves as time went on. The first came after 68 minutes when Braga looked to get in one-on-one but the keeper was out quickly to stop the chance.

The game heated up in the final 10 minutes, with chances for both sides. The first saw Balcombe make a great save to his left to deny Braga from what looked like a certain goal.

Then Jarvis Edobor had a chance to level things with just two minutes to go. Reece Cole supplied the cross from the left and the defender got his head to it in front of goal, but he couldn't quite direct it inside the post and it dropped agonisingly wide.
