Pontus Jansson's youth career began at Arlövs BI, before a move to Malmö aged 15. His senior debut came as a centre-forward in the Allsvenskan in 2009.
Switching partially to centre-back in 2010, Jansson played 18 games on the way to winning the top division. His breakthrough season came in 2012, when he played all 30 league games, before becoming one of the club's most important players during the 2013 title-winning campaign.
Jansson moved to Serie A side Torino in July 2014, making 16 appearances in his first season in northern Italy, including six games in the UEFA Europa League. His first Serie A goal came against Udinese in April 2016: the first in a 5-1 win.
A lack of game time led to a loan spell at Leeds United, which included a clause to make the move permanent. That was triggered just six months into his time at Elland Road, during which he established himself as a key part of the backline. In his first season in English football, he was named in both the EFL and Championship Team of the Season.
Jansson was named Leeds captain going forward, also signing a five-year contract at the club. The 2017/18 season saw Leeds finish 13th before appointing Marcelo Bielsa as head coach.
Bielsa described Jansson as the "best player" in the Leeds squad on their way to a third-place finish. Their play-off campaign was ended in the semi-finals with a defeat to Derby County.
In July 2019, Jansson joined Brentford on a three-year contract and became club captain under Thomas Frank. His first season would also see disappointment in the Championship play-offs, this time a 2-1 final defeat to Fulham at Wembley.
However, Jansson then skippered the Bees to a 2-0 victory over Swansea City, writing his name into the history books as only the second player to captain Brentford to top-flight promotion.
Jansson took the step up in his stride. He started all but one Premier League game the following season and scored his first goal for the club in December’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Watford at Gtech Community Stadium.
The return game provided one of Jansson’s most memorable moments in a Brentford shirt, the defender heading home a 95th-minute winner in front of the away fans at Vicarage Road.
Jansson added another goal, at home to Southampton, and reached his century of appearances for the club before the season was up.
The former Sweden international played a further 12 Premier League games this campaign, scoring in the 3-3 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.
Jansson left TW8 at the end of his contract in June 2023 to join his boyhood club Malmö in Sweden. He played 115 games for Brentford, scoring four goals. The 32-year-old also earned five Sweden caps during his time with the club.
