Brentford's Keane Lewis-Potter said that he was “over the moon” to score his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa.

In the final minute of the first half, Saman Ghoddos's whipped corner dropped kindly to Lewis-Potter inside Villa’s 18-yard box. The forward took a touch to set himself under pressure from Àlex Moreno and lashed a half-volley beyond Emiliano Martínez and into the back of the net.

A beaming Lewis-Potter then darted to the corner flag before being bundled on by his team-mates.

“I’m buzzing with it,” he said. “I’m over the moon, but it’s one of those where I’m still disappointed because we didn’t get the three points.

“The ball dropped, I nicked it in front of him [Moreno] and put it in the back of the net. It was a great feeling.”

The former Hull City man added: “I’ve waited long enough for that, I think! To celebrate with the fans and the boys on the pitch was great. Saman [Ghoddos] gave me a few whacks when I was down there!”

Lewis-Potter started in a front two alongside Yoane Wissa and revealed that the brief from head coach Thomas Frank was to get in behind the Villa backline.

“From the start, we wanted to play behind them and win the first and second balls,” he said.

“They press high and balls in behind do hurt them. Every time we had a chance to get up the pitch, we did that.

“Thomas spoke to me about getting on the shoulder of the defenders and about timing my runs.

“There were times when I was caught offside, but Villa are a good team like that and keep a high line.

“We tried to play on the shoulder and catch them off guard a bit.”

Aston Villa scored two goals in the closing stages to complete the turnaround and Lewis-Potter, who was withdrawn on 68 minutes, admitted it was a tough watch from the bench as the game boiled over at Gtech Community Stadium.

“It was a crazy second half – a bit chaotic – and watching from the bench is hard,” he said.

“Obviously we’ll watch the game again; we need to look back at what we can do better and move forward.”
