At the Brighton game we will be fundraising for the Pakistan Floods Appeal being run by the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Shandon Baptiste has encouraged the Brentford community to support the people of Pakistan, millions of whom have been severely impacted by the devastation caused by the flooding.

“It’s an emergency situation,” he said. “When these things happen, we need to come together, be as one, and help where possible.

“We want to raise awareness of the terrible situation over there, so more people can show their support. If we can just get the information out there, it will help them massively.

“If you are in a position to give, please do. Your help will make a huge difference.”

Given the large Pakistani community here in London, many will be worried about their friends and families. It’s an issue which is particularly relevant to many in West London.

Brentford FC chief executive, Jon Varney, recognised the pressures facing many people at this time but acknowledged the need for the Club to highlight what was happening. It was an issue raised via the playing squad, and Jon was keen to use the Club’s platform to amplify the Pakistan Floods Appeal.

“Obviously, there's a lot going on around the world at the moment, but one of the things that has been lost on people is the desperate situation that's happened in Pakistan," he said.

“The floods have affected over 33 million people and over 1600 people have lost their lives. Many, many people have been displaced from their homes.

“It was something that was brought to our attention by our players. We sat down with them and talked about how we can amplify the message and try and create some support, and we are delighted to get behind it."

Shandon underlined the scale of the problem and the fact that as the waters subside, many are facing a second wave of issues caused by the disaster. “It's not just a food crisis, it's a medical crisis, it’s a housing crisis. They need all different sorts of help.”

Fans attending the game against Brighton will have the opportunity to donate outside the stadium, with volunteers supporting a bucket collection. The DEC appeal will also be promoted on the LED boards and the giant screens.

Fans can also text BEES to 70000 to donate £10 to the Disasters Emergency Committee Pakistan Floods Appeal* or visit dec.org.uk.
