Yoane Wissa praised Brentford’s resilience after the Bees’ 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League.
The home side took the lead on 19 minutes - Ibrahima Konate turning Bryan Mbeumo’s corner into his own net – and then had two goals, both scored by Wissa, disallowed for offside.
But Brentford and Wissa were undeterred. Shortly before the interval, Mathias Jensen delivered a peach of a cross that Wissa met with a powerful downward header. Alisson reacted well to claw it away but not before it had crossed the line.
“It’s crazy, I scored a hat-trick today,” beamed Wissa after the full-time whistle.
“You just have to keep the mind on, because it can happen like this. I scored twice, offside, then the third goal came.
“The second [disallowed] one was a bit hard, because I really thought I’d scored, but VAR can’t lie.
“Everyone kept going forward and I’m happy I scored one goal!
“It’s crazy. Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world, so if you want to beat them you have to be at 200 per cent.
“I hope the fans enjoyed it. We worked so hard and we stayed together and that’s why we got this result."
The victory over Liverpool made it seven points from a possible nine over the festive period – and extended Brentford’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to six matches – but Wissa stressed the need for focus with more big games on the horizon.
“We know how the Premier League goes,” he said, “now we have to be humble and stay together. It’s been a good journey and if we want to keep it going, we’ll have to work very hard.”
