Brentford’s Youth Team extended their unbeaten run as three goals in 13 first-half minutes helped them to a 4-2 victory over West London neighbours QPR at Harlington this afternoon.

The Rs took the lead through Gianni Crichlow but it The Bees were in front at half-time after goals from Ian Carlo Poveda, Josh Bohui and Danny Parish.

Ruddi Clarke pulled a goal back for the home side, who had Michael Klass sent-off late on for a second bookable offence, but Courtney Austin sealed the win in stoppage-time with his second goal of the season.

In Jon De Souza’s absence, Academy Director Ose Aibangee made four changes to the side that beat Sheffield United last weekend.

Jordan Carey returned in goal, George Harmes came in at left-back, whilst Zachary Birse and Poveda made their first starts of the season at right-back and attacking midfield, respectively.

The match had a feisty undertone from the whistle; Poveda and Julius Fenn-Evans were both subjected to hefty tussles inside the first five minutes and although Brentford saw most of the ball, it was QPR who struck first through Gianni Crichlow after 11 minutes.

A long ball over the top found the winger and he beat Bees captain Seth Owens for pace before his volley – somewhat fortunately – struck the gloves of goalkeeper Jordan Carey and found the back of the net.

Carey was called into action soon after - this time successfully – as Anthony Folkes unleashed a stinging drive, which was well tipped over.

The goal spurred the home side into a sustained period of pressure but after 18 minutes Brentford equalised through the sublime Poveda.

Possession was given away cheaply from a throw-in by the Rs and after a quick break from Courtney Austin; the striker squared for Poveda who made no mistake from 10 yards.

QPR seemed unfazed by the goal and had chances to retake the lead; Josh Bowler forced Carey into a low double save soon after and Clarke’s 25 yard free-kick flew into the side netting.

Entertainment was certainly not in short supply during the game but spectators were treated to an extended step-over show from Poveda and Josh Bohui midway through the half.

On the half-hour mark, Paul Furlong’s side failed to clear their lines and fell behind to a goal from Bohui; his strike cannoned off the leg of R’s captain Jeremy Arthur and looped over the helpless Lewis Todd.

Just one minute later the Bees extended their lead again, this time through Danny Parish as he picked up Julius Fenn-Evans’ pass and rifled a shot across Todd and into the bottom-left corner for his second goal of the season.

The Rs managed to find a way back with seven minutes until the break; goalscorer Crichlow’s shot hit the post and Clarke managed to turn the ball over the line from point-blank range.

The QPR management team rung the changes at the break; Leo Donnellan, Odysseus Alfa and Rhys Springer-Downes replaced Jake Eales, Anthony Folkes and Brandon Adams.

Three minutes into the second period Harmes had a chance to put the Bees further in front but his curling free-kick was stunningly palmed away, with Todd at full stretch.

Captain Owens was booked after 50 minutes for a late challenge before a dominant spell of Bees pressure that should have put the visitors out of sight.

Austin was highly unfortunate to not convert two perfect long balls, and Todd tipped Owens’ header from Poveda’s inswinging corner, onto the bar.

This proved to be Owens’ last action in the game as he was carried off on the hour mark with a suspected ankle injury, causing a lengthy break in play.

The injury forced a reshuffle in defence; Sean Bird replaced Owens and moved to right-back with Zachary Birse partnering Chris Mepham in the heart of defence.

Both Bird and Fenn-Evans had opportunities to further extend the frail lead that would have been lost were it not for a last ditch challenge from Mepham to deny Alfa after 78 minutes.

With eight minutes remaining, Michael Klass received a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Fenn-Evans, and a scuffle that ensued four minutes later saw referee Mr Moore forced to take the names of Donnellan, Crichlow and Mepham into his book.

In the final few minutes QPR searched for an equaliser and nearly found it as Donnellan’s shot looked to be heading past Carey he made a great fingertip save to avert the danger.

And in the dying seconds, substitute Luke Dunn found space on the edge of the box, jinked from side to side and passed to Austin who finally squeezed in a shot past Todd to seal the three points.
