Brentford’s Youth Team returned to winning ways this afternoon as they survived a late scare to beat Millwall 2-1 at Calmont Road.

Josh Bohui’s second goal in as many games put the Bees ahead before the break and a rare goal from midfielder Tony Guppy doubled the advantage ten minutes after the restart.

Jordan Carey made a number of superb saves to deny the young Lions, but two minutes from time, Guppy gave away a penalty and Callum Kealy was on hand to tuck away a consolation.

Jon De Souza restored Carey to the starting eleven, whilst Zach Birse returned from injury, Juan Pablo Gonzalez Velasco replaced Ian Carlo Poveda and Kingsley Eshun started in attack at the expense of Danny Parish.

An early Reece Cole free-kick was easily held by Ryan Sandford, and within the first ten minutes Millwall were almost gifted the opener; Carey’s poor kick from Cole’s pass back fell to Eze Ebuzoene, the impressive Birse was on hand to clear.

Ebuzoene’s first-time effort from James Brown’s cross flew into the trees before Ronnie O’Donnell forced Carey into a full-stretch diving save to keep the scores level.

The Bees should have taken the lead after a classy move that saw Cole and Eshun exchange a one-two before the latter released Julius Fenn-Evans, but his angled shot fell wide of the mark.

Neither side stood out as a particularly dominant force in the first half; Eshun wasted another chance when Sandford spilt Fenn-Evans’ shot and O’Donnell’s 25 yard free-kick was well kept out by Carey.

In the final minute of the first half, Cole registered another assist as his long ball over the top was well taken by Bohui, whose deft lob beat the onrushing Sandford – his fifth of the season and Brentford’s seventeenth goal away from home – a league high.

The Lions flew out of the blocks in the second half, with Kealy shooting straight at Carey from their first attack but it was not long before Brentford eased themselves back into the game and grabbed a second.

Eshun’s run and close-range shot was palmed wide by Sandford, and from the resulting corner – which was aimed at the head of Chris Mepham – the goalkeeper fumbled and allowed unlikely goalscorer Guppy to finish well from 15 yards.

The goal visibly breathed further confidence into the side and less than five minutes later, another Cole corner was met by Zach Birse; his header thundered off the apex of the bar to safety.

For the most part, both goalkeeper’s were left with little to do until Mepham ventured out of central defence and found Bohui, but his touch was less-than-favourable and allowed Sandford to easily claim at his feet.

Carey was booked for time-wasting with seven minutes remaining and was prevented from keeping his side’s first clean sheet of the season when Guppy clumsily challenged Mikail Ndjoli; Kealy was on hand to convert low into the bottom corner.

The goalkeeper was hauled off and replaced by Cameron Greaves for the closing stages, with the danger of a red card looming, but the Bees had enough steel to fend off a late fightback in the nine added minutes and held on for the win.
