Three first half goals from Abingdon United and two late second half strikes ended Brentford Women's Vitality Women’s FA Cup journey.
Coming off the back of their recent defeat to Dulwich Women Reserves in their LSE Regional WFL Division One North fixture Bees Manager, Karleigh Osborne, was looking for a response from his players as they took on a strong Abingdon side in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.
Within the first five minutes of the game the hosts showed the danger they possess in the attacking areas of the pitch. Abingdon centre forward Lauren May had an early sighter on the Brentford goal but Lilly Hadrava made a great save to keep the score line level.
On 10 minutes the Abingdon number 10 was at it again this time finding the back of the net, but the offside flag saved the Bees from going a goal down.
The Bees will aim to bounce back next week in the League Cup
After several warning signs the home team took the lead on 12 minutes when Amy Pipe’s effort from 25 yards lobbed Hadrava, who was left helpless following a great strike.
The Bees began to grow into the game and came close to finding an equaliser on 25 minutes when a Jodie Reid pass fell to Nadia Peters, but the right-back's effort went just over the bar.
Despite the pressure from Brentford, it was the hosts who got the second of the game on 35 minutes, and it was Pipe again with the goal. The Abingdon number seven had a tap in from four yards out after May’s effort was saved by Hadrava, but the Abingdon player got to the rebound first to make it 2-0.
Chloe Logie in action for Brentford against Abingdon
Just two minutes later Abingdon made it three after a corner kick fell to centre back, Samara Osborne-Ricketts. The defender was left unmarked and was able to pass the ball into the back of the net giving her side a further advantage in the game.
Brentford showed desire in the early stages of the second half to get themselves a goal allowing them to get back into the game, but the experience and physicality of the home team was making it difficult for the Bees to create any clearcut opportunities.
Osborne had his keeper to thank as the Brentford number one made several impressive saves in the second half. Brentford continued to work hard to get back into the game but the damage was already done in the first 45 minutes, the best chance of the game for the away team came in the 87th minute when Nikki Saunders' shot from long range forced a good save from the Abingdon keeper.
After being kept out for the majority of the second half the hosts got their fourth on 89 minutes with May completing her hat-trick. Her strike from eight yards out had enough power to beat Hadrava despite getting a strong hand on the ball.
A few minutes later Abingdon made it five when number nine, Lindsay Pinker, had a free header from a corner and diverted the ball past Hadrava to give her side an emphatic victory.
The Bees will be looking to bounce back next weekend in the Women’s League Cup as they face Newhaven at Bedfont Sports Centre.
