Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said there was no doubt his team deserved to beat Crewe Alexandra.

The Bees ended a run of four away games without a win with their victory in Cheshire last night.

Bradley Wright-Phillips opened the scoring with a near post header and Marcello Trotta sealed it with a well-executed second late on.

The Bees took advantage of many of their npower League One promotion rivals losing on Tuesday night to pick up points on the other teams at the top of the table.

Uwe said the results – leaders Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield United and Swindon Town, who are fifth and sixth in the table, all losing on Tuesday – gave his team a boost ahead of the Crewe clash.

“The players were absolutely focussed,” said the Brentford Manager, speaking after the game.

“The players realised after the results last night what a chance we had today.

“We have put ourselves in a fantastic position now.

“The players went in to the game focussed on the job in hand.

“We had 24 attempts on goal today, this says everything.

“We clearly, clearly deserved to win; there is no discussion about that.

“The results last night definitely gave us a boost.”

Uwe said it was a team effort to take the points against a side who won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final just three days earlier.

He said he set his team up to attack Crewe, just as he did in almost all their games, and it worked well.

The win came after Brentford took one point from their last four away games, which came in a 1-1 draw at Coventry City on Saturday.

“In 90 per cent of our games we attack,” he said.

“We tried to play on the counter-attack at Coventry but that was just a different way to win the game.

“Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t.

“We succeeded in a good fashion tonight

“Crewe have very good movement up front but our back four did tremendously.

“Jonathan Douglas is playing with a knock, he was fantastic today, everybody was.

“We wanted to play to our front two today and test their back four.

“They combined very well and caused problems.

“The substitutes also contributed to our three points.

“It was a team effort today and we were professional.

“We were attack-minded and did what we had to do to win the game.

“With the young team we have that is quite an achievement.”

Uwe said the number of chances his team created showed their attacking intent.

He also praised his defence for keeping a good Crewe team out.

“We created chance after chance throughout the 90 minutes,” said the Brentford Manager.

“It was a testament to how offensive minded we were.

“We didn’t use them all, but we used two of them.

“As long as we win, I have no problems with that.

“It was important to get a clean sheet, that is another two goals to our goal difference.

“That could be vital at the end.

“It also builds confidence.

“It is an achievement to get a clean sheet against Crewe here; they are a good attacking side.”

After the draw at Coventry on Saturday, Uwe said the match at Crewe was one his side had to win if they wanted to finish in the top two in League One and win automatic promotion.

The victory puts them four points behind leaders Doncaster and two behind AFC Bournemouth, who are second.

The Bees have a game in hand on both and welcome Doncaster to Griffin Park on the final day of the season.

Four wins from their final four games will give Brentford the npower League One title.

“Normally I would not try to put pressure on a young side,” said Uwe.

“That can be counter-productive.

“But we have put ourselves in such a good situation, we had to highlight that we had to win our game in hand.

“We are now two points behind Bournemouth with a game in hand.

“We will take it game by game but I decided we had to highlights this as a game we had to win if we were going for automatic promotion.

“It is a dream come true that we are in this position with four games to go before the end of the season.

“The players performed heroically today.

“I have seldom seen so much concentration before the game and on the pitch in what we have to do.

“It is a massive improvement, young players can forget things but for 90 minutes we were professional.”

Brentford’s next game is against Portsmouth on Saturday.

Portsmouth have been in administration for the entire season and are 22nd in League One, two points from safety.

The future of the Club appears to have been secured after Pompey Supporters’ Trust was given the green light to take over and they should exit administration later this month.

However, the Football League are set to impose a ten-point deduction when Portsmouth exit administration, which will make relegation a near certainty.

Uwe said Portsmouth’s problems were not his concern and his team faced a challenge to recover in a short period for the game.

He added the Brentford supporters would need to help his team overcome the physical disadvantage.

“We are not interested in whether Portsmouth are in crisis or not,” said Uwe.

“We are only interested in what we have to do.

“Portsmouth have an advantage, we have only two days to prepare, they have a whole week.

“That is our challenge.

“They are fighting for their lives, we are fighting too.

“They have a whole week to prepare, we have two days.

“In this game we need the supporters.

“We need the supporters on Saturday to push us to win the game.

“This win will give us a boost.

“We have to see who is available, do we bring fresh players in or stick with the players who were fantastic tonight.

“I have to do my homework.

“Portsmouth are dangerous, we know that.

“We can win against anybody and we can lose against anybody, this league is crazy.”
