Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said he was proud of his team’s second half performance in their npower League One Play-Off Final defeat against Yeovil Town.
But he admitted his players were nervous in a first half where they fell 2-0 behind.
The Bees were beaten at Wembley by the Somerset side despite a stirring second half revival.
Paddy Madden put Yeovil ahead six minutes in and Dan Burn headed a second from a corner late in the first period.
Brentford pulled one back through Harlee Dean early in the second half but Yeovil goalkeeper Marek Stech – named Man of the Match – and an impressively organised defence kept The Bees out.
Yeovil took the place in The Championship with their third win over The Bees this season while Brentford will be in the third tier again next season.
“There were two very different halves from us,” said Uwe, speaking to Bees Player after the game.
“We were nervous in the first half, you could see in a couple of players it was their first time at Wembley.
“I am not blaming anybody, this is natural.
“Every time we play Yeovil they score with their first shot.
“That makes it very difficult.
“They are a team that defends deep, in their own half, very well.
“In the second half it was a different story.
“I am so proud.
“We gave a sloppy goal away just before half time and we had nothing to lose.
“Then our players lost their nerves and went for it.
“We bombarded them but we did it in the right way.
“We saw the real Brentford in the second half.
“We created chances, scored a goal and created further chances.
“If there was a football God we would have got a second goal.
“It would have been a different story in extra time.”
Uwe said 2012/13 had been a “special season” at Brentford.
The Bees had the best home record in npower League One and finished third in the table.
They were fractions away from automatic promotion when a penalty hit the crossbar in the last game against Doncaster Rovers with 94 minutes on the clock and the score line blank, a win would have been enough to send The Bees up.
Chelsea were seven minutes away from elimination in a memorable FA Cup tie at Griffin Park and more than 6,000 Bees fans made the trip to Stamford Bridge for the Fourth Round Replay.
“We have massively overachieved this season,” said Uwe.
“To miss out now, having played like we did in the second half, is very sad.
“I feel for my players.
“This has been a special, fantastic season.”
Uwe said Brentford Football Club and the group of players that took The Bees so close to the second tier had a bright future.
He said his challenge was to keep the group together and fight for promotion again next season.
He said everything that the group had been through this season would stand them in good stead.
“Our challenge is to keep the players and go again,” he added.
“We have a challenge to keep hold of our younger players.
“If we lose one or two we will have to find new ones.
“The experience we gained from this season and the massive games we have had can only make us better.
“This team and this Club has a massive future.”
