Tom Field feels that he still has so much more to come after he committed his future to Brentford until the summer of 2020. The 19-year-old, who joined The Bees four years ago, signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal this morning having impressed in recent weeks since returning from injury. Speaking after signing his new deal Tom said that it is now up to him to keep working hard and prove he deserves a starting spot every week.

“I am delighted: it is where I wanted to stay,” said Tom, speaking to Bees Player. “It is a really good club which is moving forward. I have supported it since I was a boy with my family. I was held back with injury at the start of the year so it was good to get back in. Hopefully I can keep improving and keep proving to the gaffer, and to the fans, that I can play in the Championship week in week out. The Championship is physically tough. I do get tired but that is something that I have to work on and will work on. I have got so much more going forward that the fans haven’t seen in games yet. I have got the confidence now so I am sure that I will be going forward in the next couple of games so there is plenty to look forward to.”

Tom made his professional debut in last April’s 3-0 win over Fulham at Griffin Park, setting up Scott Hogan for The Bees third goal, but had to wait until December for his next league appearance due to a series of niggling injuries. After returning against Burton Albion as a late substitute, Tom started the trips to Bristol City and Leeds United last week. Tom said the trust that Bees Head Coach Dean Smith showed by starting him in two high-profile matches meant a lot, as did the support he has received from the fans.

“Dean’s support has been massive,” said Tom. “He has trusted me in big games and that is always nice to see. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully play week in week out in the Championship. There were a few nerves before the games, especially the Bristol City one, because I didn’t know what the fans would be like. The Brentford fans have got behind me and I started playing from there. The fans have been really good to me.”

With Tom a Brentford player until 2020 and Rico Henry signing a contract until 2021 in the summer, The Bees left-back options look settled for the foreseeable future. Tom is looking forward to battling it out with Rico for that left-back spot and thinks the pair will bring the best out of each other.

“Myself and Rico Henry are friends off the pitch but on the pitch we have to have a little battle and then whoever wins, wins,” said Tom. “We will support each other and make each other better. Competition is always good: it is never a bad thing. If you have nobody to compete against then you are never going to get better.”
