More than 60 players have turned out in the red and white of Brentford and the red of tomorrow’s opponents Charlton Athletic since the beginning of the Football League. Ahead of the 50th meeting between the two London sides we look back at some of the highest-profile players to play on both sides of the River Thames.
Ralph Allen: Brentford 13 appearances: 4 goals; Charlton Athletic 52 appearances 47 goals
Had Ralph joined The Bees at any other time in the club’s history he could have gone on to be one of our greatest ever goalscorers. However the Newcastle-born striker’s three years at Griffin Park saw him play just 13 league games as Jack Holliday and Bill Lane, amongst others, fired The Bees up the divisions. Ralph scored more than 100 goals for Brentford’s reserves over this time and showed his worth when he moved to The Addicks in 1934. At Charlton he averaged almost a goal a game, scoring 47 goals in only 52 league appearances. He still holds the Charlton record for league goals in one season, 32 in the 1934-35 season that saw The Addicks run away with the Division Three South title, a feat made more impressive by the fact that he didn't join them until October.
Keith Jones: Brentford 213 appearances 20 goals; Charlton Athletic 178 appearances 7 goals
Londoner Keith made nearly 400 appearances for Brentford and Charlton in the late 1980’s and 1990’s. The midfielder spent four years at Brentford between 1987 and 1991 which included the famous run to the 1989 FA Cup Quarter-Finals and defeat to Liverpool. After a spell with Southend United he joined The Addicks in 1994 and helped the South London side into the Premier League under Alan Curbishley. He was an almost-ever present in The Addicks 1997/98 promotion season and scored in the 1998 Play-Off final penalty shootout win over Sunderland.
Hermann Hreidarsson: Brentford 48 appearances 8 goals; Charlton Athletic 149 appearances 4 goals
In the space of 13 months in the late 1990’s Hermann Hreidarsson became The Bees most expensive ever-signing, won the Division Three title and then became our most expensive ever player sale. The Icelandic defender’s passing range from the centre of defence always made him stand out and it was no surprise that he enjoyed an 11-year career in the Premier League after leaving in October 1999. Hermann holds a joint record for being relegated from the Premier League with all five top-flight clubs he has played for. He spent four seasons at The Valley, playing more than 30 league games in every campaign, but couldn’t prevent The Addicks sliding out of the top flight in 2007.
Sam Sodje: Brentford 100 appearances 14 goals; Charlton Athletic 29 apperances 4 goals
Sam joined Brentford in 2004 but missed the first month of the season through suspension after picking up four red cards for Margate the previous season. Once in the team he, alongside Michael Turner, provided the backbone for two successive FA Cup Fifth Round campaigns and two trips to the Play-Offs. The pacey defender was also a potent attacking option, scoring in the 2-2 FA Cup draw away at Southampton, on his way to 14 goals in two full season. Sam joined Charlton on loan from Reading in 2007 but couldn’t help The Addicks bounce back to the top-flight after the previous season’s relegation despite scoring twice in wins over Cardiff City and Sheffield United.
