Tony Craig said being named Players’ Player of the Season at the Brentford Player of the Year Ball was “the ultimate honour”.

The defender picked up two prizes at the awards night last Sunday, May 4.

He also picked up the Bees Travel Club ‘Player of the Year’ award, voted for by those who travel on the Supporters’ Association coaches to away matches, for his performances away from home this season.

The defender, who captained the team for most of the season, was part of a back four that kept 20 Sky Bet League One clean sheets this season.

In total he played 48 games in all competitions in 2013/14, including 44 of the 46 League One matches.

“This is the ultimate honour,” said Tony, when collecting the Players’ Player of the Season award.

“To get something voted for by your fellow professionals is the ultimate honour.

“I thank everyone for voting.

“They are a great team, we have been through a lot and it has been a great season.”

Tony also praised the fans that follow Brentford away from home.

“It is a great occasion to play away,” he said.

“We get great support and to win is fantastic.”

Brentford won nine of their 23 away games this season, drawing another nine.

Tony said the highlight away from home was the win at Leyton Orient in March.

Brentford survived the loss of James Tarkowski to a red card to win the televised top-of-the-table clash 1-0 with Marcello Trotta scoring the only goal in first half stoppage time.

The Bees started the day third in Sky Bet League One and went to East London to take on the team that were second in the table at kick-off.

They won a league game against their London neighbours away from home for the first time in nearly two decades and did so despite playing more than 45 minutes with ten men.

“The most memorable away game was at Leyton Orient,” said Tony.

“There was a lot at stake, we went there, won 1-0 with ten men and it killed them.

“It gave us the momentum to get through to the end of the season.

“It was a great win.”

Tony joined Brentford from Millwall in 2012 and said he would be looking forward to going back in The Championship.

“Apart from the first home game, the game at Millwall will be the second fixture I look for,” he said.

“We are a Championship club, I want to be a Championship player and I can’t wait to get started.”

Video highlights from the Player of the Year Ball will follow soon.
