Saturday will be the 50th London derby between The Bees and Charlton Athletic. After The Addicks’ fall from the Premier League in the mid-2000s the two sides have been regular opponents in the last few years, meeting on 12 occasions. Ahead of Saturday’s meeting at Griffin Park we look back at our four most recent victories over the South East London side.

Charlton Athletic 0 Brentford 3, Sky Bet Championship, The Valley, 24 October 2015

The form of the two sides coming into the match couldn’t have been more different: Charlton had lost six of their previous seven while The Bees were looking for their third win of the week after successes over Rotherham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. If it’s a cliché that the form book goes out of the window for derby matches then this was a match that very much went to form.

Alan Judge scored one and made two more as Brentford cruised to victory. John Swift grabbed his first goal for the club, heading home Judge’s first-half cross and it was 2-0 just after the break as the in-form Irish midfielder capped off a sweeping counter attack move. Substitute Lasse Vibe wrapped up the win with five minutes to go as The Bees completed a perfect week in front of more than 2,200 travelling supporters.

Charlton Athletic 0 Brentford 3, Football League Trophy South Section, The Valley 05.10.11

A goal inside 70 seconds from Blair Adams set Uwe Rösler’s side on their way to the South Section Quarter Final of the Football League Trophy after a comprehensive win over then unbeaten league leaders Charlton live on Sky Sports.

The Addicks had no answer for Brentford’s attacking play as Adams scored his first professional goal, tapping home after John Sullivan parried out a David Clarkson shot. Kevin O’Connor doubled The Bees advantage midway through the half from the penalty spot after Toumani Diagouraga had been felled and Diagouraga got the goal his performance deserved on the hour, finishing off a fine team move.

Charlton Athletic 0 Brentford 1, npower League One, The Valley, 12.03.11

Good things come to those who wait and that was certainly the case as an 85-year wait for a win at The Valley was ended thanks to an 89th minute goal from Leon Legge.

Nearly 900 Brentford fans had made the trip across London and as time ticked on it looked increasing like the wait for a win in SE7 would continue. Nicky Forster’s side had come close through Lewis Grabban, Sam Saunders and Marcus Bean but just as it looked like the points would be shared Myles Weston sent over an inviting cross that Legge powered home before continuing his run to end up in the away end with The Bees fans.

Brentford 2 Charlton Athletic 1, npower League One, Griffin Park 02.10.10

Brentford hadn’t beaten The Addicks in 18 years and went into the game bottom of League One with six points from nine matches against a Charlton outfit that was outside the Play-Off places on goal difference. However all that went out of the window after a dominant first-half display and a gutsy second-half one saw Andy Scott’s side pick up all three points

Gary Alexander lashed The Bees ahead on the quarter hour mark after Charlton had failed to clear a corner and that lead was doubled on the half-hour when Toumani Diagouraga netted his first goal in Brentford colours after good work by the inspired Myles Weston. The visitors improved after the break and did eventually find a way back into the game late on when Scott Wagstaff netted. Akpo Sodje had two great chances to steal a point for the South East London side late on but on both occasions Ben Hamer came to Brentford’s rescue.

And one that went the other way …

Charlton Athletic 3 Brentford 1, FA Challenge Cup Fifth Round, The Valley, 18.02.06

Fresh from knocking Premier League side Sunderland out in the Fourth Round Martin Allen’s side, backed by more than 5,000 vocal Brentford fans, headed to The Valley dreaming of another top flight scalp.

35 places separated the two sides in the football pyramid and Charlton wasted little time in asserting their dominance. Darren Bent sent the Addicks on their way, latching on to a throughball in the fourth minute and calming any Charlton nerves with a crisp finish. Jay Bothroyd fired home a free-kick just before half-time and Bryan Hughes tucked home a third after the break. Isaiah Rankin made sure the travelling fans went home with something to cheer as he poked home a late consolation but it was The Addicks who progressed.
