Kevin O’Connor said his stoppage time penalty to earn Brentford an npower League One Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg draw against Swindon Town was a “special moment”.

The Bees drew 1-1 in Wiltshire in the first match of the tie and the teams will face off again at Griffin Park on Monday for a place in the League One Play-Off Final.

The late spot kick came a week after Brentford had missed one in similar circumstances to agonisingly fall just short of automatic promotion.

A win over Doncaster Rovers last week would have given Brentford a top two finish and a place in The Championship but Marcello Trotta missed a stoppage time penalty and the visitors broke away to score and win the game.

Kevin said he just wanted to make sure he scored after a “tough week” and wanted to send the Brentford fans home happy.

“I was calm and a bit angry if anything after the penalty was awarded,” said the Club Captain, speaking on Bees Player after the match.

“I just wanted to make sure I scored.

“I didn’t look at the goalkeeper.

“I knew where I was putting it and if he was good enough to save it, he saved it.

“I put it where I wanted and right in the bottom corner.

“Last week was tough for me and for everyone, with what happened.

“To send the fans home happy was a special moment.”

The game was played with a strong wind blowing down the pitch and the game was scrappy for periods.

Kevin said Swindon played the conditions better than The Bees.

The home side pressed Brentford back and restricted the options for a pass.

“Conditions weren’t great but I thought Swindon played them better than us,” said Kevin.

“They were good on the day.

“We hung in there, we know we didn’t play great but we are happy to come away with a draw.

“They restricted our options, particularly in the first half.

“You have to hang in there and get something at the end.”

Massimo Luongo put Swindon ahead with 20 minutes remaining but Kevin said the Brentford players knew they were still in the tie.

He said the introduction of substitutes Harry Forrester, who won the penalty, Sam Saunders and Farid El Alagui helped The Bees turn the game around.

“On the pitch we knew we were still in it,” said Kevin.

“We knew we had the second leg, even if had ended 1-0.

“All credit to the lads, Harry came on and made a difference and we went from there.

“The substitutions were really good.

“It got us going.”

Kevin said Brentford would need to play better in the second half of the tie if they were to progress but home advantage would be crucial.

“It is very tight,” he said.

“We are level at half time but now we have home advantage.

“Hopefully we can play a bit better than we did today and get the result.

“We know we can play better.

“We have to get in their faces like they did to us today.

“The crowd were brilliant for us last week against Doncaster and I’m sure they will be again on Monday.”
