Brentford's Under-18 Professional Development League Two South title chances were dealt a blow as The Bees were held 1-1 by Sheffield Wednesday at Middlewood.

The draw, coupled with a Charlton Atheltic win over Coventry City, means that should The Addicks pick up four points from their remaining two matches they will win the title on goal difference.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Jon De Souza's side as they couldn't find a way through an organised and resilient Wednesday backline.

The hosts took the lead late on in the first-half as Mason Duffy slotted home at the second attempt from close range.

For a long while it looked like that goal would be the winner until, deep into injury time, Audrius Laucys got a vital touch to a Chris Mepham cross to find the back of the net.

Looking for the three points that would see them set a new points record in the Under-18 Professional Development League Two South The Bees started the stronger.

Josh Murray got a vital touch to prevent Herson Rodrigues Alves running through, Josh Bohui had a shot deflected and Brad McDonagh brilliantly denied Tom Field, all in the first four minutes.

McDonagh made another good save to deny Laucys before the hosts began to play their way into the game.

Wednesday's pressing, coupled with a dry, bumpy pitch meant that Brentford were finding it difficult to play through their opponents.

The Bees were still creating chances but they were by no means in control of the match.

Bohui saw another shot deflected behind for a corner before Lacuys passed up a very presentable chance, heading wide at the near post.

Wednesday had created little in the way of goalscoring opportunities in the first-half but when they did create one they took it.

The hosts spread the ball well from right to left and although Nik Tzanev was out well to block Duffy's first effort the ball rebounded to the wideman who forced the ball home from a tight angle.

James Ferry came close to cancelling out that strike in the closing moments of the half but, following good interplay with Jeremiah Kamanzi, he shot wide on the half-volley.

With 45 minutes left of the league season to try and set the new points record Brentford started very much on the front foot in the second-half.

Field and Laucys were pushing forward from full-back and Reece Cole, who replaced Ferry at half-time, was often the only midfielder not within 15 yards of the edge of the Wednesday box.

Westbrooke pulled a shot wide at the near post but The Bees' attacking intent was leaving them light at the back.

Warren Clarke shot straight at Tzanev and Cole got a good block to turn Conor Kirby's shot behind.

Under-16 Julius Fenn-Evans was introduced on the hour and he almost made an instant impact but he fired straight at McDonagh after doing well to cut inside from the right.

Duffy could have grabbed his second of the afternoon but Tzanev denied him, while at the other end Kyjuon Marsh-Brown pulled a shot wide after good work by Cole and Fenn-Evans.

Seth Owens brought a fine flying save out of McDonagh at his near post as Brentford pressed forward in the final 20 minutes.

Rodrigues-Alves teed up Westbrooke but the midfielder opened up his body too much and he pushed his shot from 15 yards wide of the far post.

Duffy should have wrapped up the points for the hosts with 15 minutes to go but he headed wide at the near post when well placed.

As time ticked down Brentford threw more and more players forward but it looked like the massed ranks of Wednesday defenders would hold out.

Marsh-Brown shot straight at McDonagh and the home goalkeeper was in the right place to deny Kamanzi but finally The Bees did find a way through.

Chris Mepham cut inside onto his left foot and curled in a ball that Laucys got just enough of a toe onto to turn it into the bottom corner.

There was barely time for the restart to be taken as Brentford extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches ahead of the end of season play-offs.
