Sergi Canos will spend the rest of the season on loan at Greek Super League side Olympiacos after completing a deadline day move.

The 25-year-old flew into Greece yesterday before completing the formalities of his half-season switch earlier today, Tuesday 31 January.

Canos joins an Olympiacos side who currently sit fourth in the Greek top flight with six games of the regular season remaining.

The defending champions are on a 12-game unbeaten run and have cut the gap to leaders AEK Athens down to five points.

Canos’ first action could come on Sunday as the Red-Whites head to fierce rivals PAOK Thessaloniki.

Phil Giles, Brentford FC director of football, said: “We would like to wish Sergi all the best for the second half of the season.

“He has not played as many games this season as he would have liked, and this is a great opportunity for him.

“We are sure Sergi will do very well in Greece and will be as loved there as he is by our fans here.

“He has played an important role in our recent history and produced some very big performances in some very big games. He will always be the player who scored our first Premier League goal.

“He was also a key part of the team when we were making progress in the Championship. He was a young player that developed with us and excited our fans with the way he played and the goals he scored.

“We have the option to extend Sergi’s contract in the summer, so it is very possible that we will see him back with us.”

Only 12 players in Brentford history have played more games and scored more goals for the club than Canos, who first joined the Bees on loan from Liverpool in August 2015.

Quickly establishing himself as a terrace favourite, a then 18-year-old Canos scored our 2015/16 Goal of the Season against Reading and ended his debut campaign with seven goals from 39 appearances.

On returning to Anfield, he made what proved to be his only Liverpool appearance as a late substitute on the final day of the Premier League season against West Bromwich Albion.

The former Barcelona youngster had a brief spell with Norwich City ahead of his return to TW8, this time permanently, six years ago today.

He made more than 100 appearances over the next two-and-a-half years, scoring 16 goals, but a serious knee injury picked up in October 2019 ruled him out for nine months.

Canos returned to fitness for Brentford’s run to the 2019/20 Play-Off final before enjoying a career-defining season as Thomas Frank’s side reached the Premier League 10 months later.

Canos played 55 games that campaign, scoring nine goals. He featured in every one of our Sky Bet Championship and Play-Off fixtures; his four goals in December, which included a stunning hat-trick at Cardiff City, saw him nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award.

Canos passed 200 games for the club during that season and wrote his name further into Bees history against Arsenal on the opening night of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign with our first goal back in the top flight after a 74-year absence - a strike that saw him pick up a second Brentford Goal of the Season prize.

He ended last season with three goals in 31 Premier League appearances and has gone onto make a further six appearances under Thomas Frank this term.

In total, Canos heads to Greece having played 249 games for Brentford, 36 of which have come in the Premier League. He has scored 36 goals for the Bees.
