The Chairman of Icelandic football club UMF Selfoss said he is honoured his team have been able to set up a partnership with Brentford Football Club.
The Bees announced yesterday a ground-breaking deal had been agreed with the Icelandic team.
The arrangement will see players from Brentford’s Youth Team and Development Squad; those aged 17 to 21, going to play in Iceland as part of their professional development.
The Bees will also be able to exchange coaching ideas with the Icelandic team and will be able to use Selfoss’ scouting network to learn about the best young players from the Northern European nation.
Óskar Sigurðsson, Chairman of UMF Selfoss, said: “This partnership is a milestone for Selfoss in order to develop the clubs players, coaches and academy.
“We are honoured to have this partnership with Brentford and are sure that both clubs will benefit from it.”
Selfoss was founded as a general sports club in 1936 and the football department, which has become, UMF Selfoss was founded in 1955.
Selfoss were generally a second tier club in Iceland but over the past few years have yo-yoed between the Premier League, Úrvalsdeild, and the second tier, 1. deild.
Gunnar Guðmundsson is the current Head Coach at Selfoss and he is also in charge of the Iceland Under-17 team.
Ose Aibangee, Brentford FC Academy Director, said the deal would enable The Bees to find the stars of Icelandic football before they hit the wider stage.
Óskar Sigurðsson added: “Iceland has produced many great footballers and last year three young Selfoss players became professional players with top clubs in Scandinavia.
“We will assist Brentford in scouting for promising players and also promote the good work carried out by Brentford.
"Hopefully we will raise the numbers of followers of the club in Iceland.”
