May dawned with Brentford still in with a chance of back to back promotions with just one match remaining in the Sky Bet Championship regular season.

A comfortable 3-0 home win against relegated Wigan Athletic coupled with defeats for Ipswich Town and Derby County meant that Brentford finished fifth, and qualified for the Play-Offs, in their first season back in the Sky Bet Championship. Alex Pritchard, Andre Gray and Jota were the Brentford scorers on a memorable afternoon in West London that set up a two-legged Play-Off Semi-Final against Middlesbrough.

A late-deflected Fernando Amorebieta strike meant it was advantage Middlesbrough after the first-leg of the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs. Jelle Vossen had Boro ahead at half-time but Andre Gray levelled the tie after the break as Brentford took the game to their opponents. However deep into injury time Amorebieta’s shot took a wicked deflection off Jake Bidwell to find the back of the net.

The Bees would need a fast start in the second leg to get back into the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs but that wasn’t the case as Lee Tomlin, Kike and Albert Adomah scored to send Boro through to Wembley for the Play-Off final. A 5-1 aggregate defeat spelt the end of a wonderful first season for Mark Warburton’s side in the Sky Bet Championship as Middlesbrough and Norwich City would contest the Play-Off final.

Brentford moved quickly to plan for the new season as less than 24 hours after the Play-Off final defeat Rasmus Ankersen and Phil Giles were announced as the new Co-Directors of Football. A first signing also arrived as Akaki Gogia joined on a long-term deal from German 3.Liga side FC Hallescher.

There was more Play-Off hurt as Brentford’s Youth Team were defeated in the final of the Under-18 Professional Development League Two Play-Offs after a 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Griffin Park. Joshua Umerah scored the only goal after just five minutes before The Addicks withstood a late Brentford barrage to pick up the league trophy.

It was awards time after the end of the regular season with Stuart Dallas picking up the Goal of the Year for his stunning strike away at Fulham and Toumani Diagouraga named the Player of the Year. There were plenty of other awards on offer with wins for Jota, Andre Gray and Alex Pritchard. The Player of the Year ball also saw Kevin O’Connor and Marcus Gayle added to the Brentford FC Hall of Fame.

There was also joy for Brentford players out on loan as Will Grigg secured promotion to the Sky Bet Championship with MK Dons however Alfie Mawson’s fairytale first season in the Football League would end as Wycombe Wanderers lost the Sky Bet League Two Play-off final on penalties. However the 21-year-old defender would pick up six awards at the Wycombe Wanderers end of season awards dinner including the Supporters and Players Player of the Year.

In player news Emmanuel Oyeleke signed for Sky Bet League Two side Exeter City. Kevin O’Connor officially announced his retirement to take up a coaching role with Lee Carsley’s Development Squad after a 15 year playing career. Meanwhile Tommy Smith and Nick Proschwitz were released at the end of their contracts.

It was announced that highlights of the Football League would move from BBC to Channel 5 starting from the 2015/16 Sky Bet Football League season.

Head of Medical Neil Greig raised £6,000 for charity as he took part in the 2015 Virgin London Marathon.

Echelford Primary School won the 125th Anniversary Schools Tournament organised by the Brentford FC Community Sports Trust before Brentford were awarded a Family Excellence Award from the Football League.

Matthew Benham’s Danish club FC Midtjylland secured the Danish Superliga title with three matches to spare and ensured qualification for next season’s Champions League.

The new Brentford stadium at Lionel Road moved one step closer as a deal was signed with Network Rail for the Lionel Road site.

Nik Tzanev received a call-up to the New Zealand Under-20 squad for the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand. Moses Odubajo was awarded his third England Under-20 cap as the Young Lions drew with Morocco 3-3 in their first match of the Toulon Tournament. The right-back added a fourth cap two days later as he played 90 minutes in England’s 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast.

Stuart Dallas and Will Grigg were involved as Northern Ireland drew 1-1 with Qatar at Crewe Alexandra’s Gresty Road. Stuart gave Michael O’Neill’s side the lead with his first international goal but the Qataris levelled late on.

Mark Warburton and David Weir officially left Brentford at the end of their contracts. The duo had guided Brentford to Sky Bet League One promotion in the 2013/14 season and then the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs in the 2014/15 season.
