After two defeats to start off February, The Bees wait for a win went on as Derby County struck three times in the final ten minutes to hand Darren Wassall a first win as The Rams manager. After an even opening 45 minutes, Alan Judge fired Dean Smith’s side in front with a fine individual strike. It looked like that goal would be enough to send the home fans home happy but Jeff Hendrick netted a fortunate equaliser before Cyrus Christie put Derby ahead from close range. Chris Martin added a third to flatter the visitors and extend Brentford’s run of defeats to three. Four days later, and under the lights at Griffin Park, Dean Smith’s side did get back to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. John Swift found the net twice and Sergi Canos was also on target as Wolves were blown away by a fine attacking performance.
After the good performance against Wolves there was disappointment the following Saturday as The Bees fell to a 2-1 defeat against relegation threatened Rotherham United. Matt Derbyshire fired The Millers ahead on the half-hour but Alan Judge levelled before the break following a contentious penalty decision. The decisive goal arrived 20 minutes from time as Danny Ward took advantage of Brentford’s failure to clear a corner. The match also saw captain Jake Bidwell make his 200th appearance in a Brentford shirt.
Ben Morris and Charlie Brown got the goals for Ipswich Town’s Under-18s as they got the better of Jon De Souza’s Youth Team in East Anglia while the news from the Under-21s was little better as they were beaten 3-0 by Bristol City in the West Country. Adam El-Abd, Shawn McCoulsky, and Connor Evans were on target for The Robins as they capitalised on a lethargic start from Flemming Pedersen’s side. Local bragging rights went the way of Queens Park Rangers in the Youth Team derby thanks to goals from Rhys Springer-Downes, Gianni Crichlow, and Ody Alfa as the Under-18s continued to struggle for results.
Nearly 18 months of injury hell for Scott Hogan was forgotten about as he scored seven minutes into his comeback from a knee injury for the Development Squad. The striker had been absent since August 2014 but there was no sign of rustiness as he slotted home Bradley Clayton’s through ball for his first goal for the club. The Eagles hit back to net twice in quick succession before Andy Gogia smashed home late on to ensure the points were shared.
In other news, an undisclosed compensation agreement was agreed between Brentford and Barnsley for the summer sale of defender Alfie Mawson.
