Scott Hogan said he was always confident that he would get a chance as his injury time header extended Brentford’s unbeaten run to four matches following a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at Griffin Park. Lee Tomlin curled The Robins in front just ahead of the break and it looked like that might be the winning goal, especially when Hogan missed an 87th minute penalty. However the striker wasn’t to be denied as he headed home an injury time equaliser in front of the Ealing Road.
Speaking to Bees Player after his first goal for the club, Scott said: “My emotion is relief. It was just nice to score. It was a good save from the penalty and those things happen in football. It has been a long time coming for obvious reasons. My return has coincided with Lasse Vibe returning to form so I have had to sit on the bench. I have been limited to ten minutes here and there. I am always confident that the more minutes I get the more chances I will get. If you take the penalty away I have had one chance and scored one goal and I am confident.
“The ball has come in and Jake Bidwell has headed it across goal. There was a lad directly behind me and I just flicked me head at it. It is a natural instinct that I think most strikers should have. It was just relief after missing the penalty and letting people down. I have had a lot of time to speak to Chris Domoney about football recently. I said to him after the match that the feeling of relief was the biggest moment of relief that I have ever experienced in my life. I hope I don’t ever have to have anything like that again.”
The point means that The Bees have now collected ten points from their last four matches after wins over Nottingham Forest, Bolton Wanderers, and Ipswich Town last week. With five more matches remaining this season Scott thinks that remaining unbeaten until the end of the campaign could set The Bees up well for a fast start next year.
“It should have been three points today,” said Scott. “We had a bad spell and then we regrouped. We are on a really good run and we don’t want to lose a game between now and the end of the season. We want to finish as high as possible and crack the top ten. A good end to the season allows us to come back in pre-season knowing what we can do when we work hard and take on board what the manager has been saying to us. Momentum in football is a big thing and coming into pre-season off the back of nine or ten games unbeaten sets you up for the season well. If you can go on those sort of runs why can’t you go on one like that at the start of the season. Starting the season on that sort of run can set you up for the season like Brighton and Hove Albion have this season.”
Scott has had to bide his time in recent weeks with Lasse Vibe enjoying a purple patch, scoring five goals in his last three matches before today. While Scott has no complaints about not starting in recent weeks he warned Vibe that he will keep working hard until he secures a place in The Bees starting line-up.
“Lasse is settling into English football,” said Scott. “We know his qualities with his pace and his movement but if someone is playing in my position I want their position. He has shown what he is about but I am pushing him on the training ground. Lasse deserves to play because he is playing well but I will push him all the way until I am on the pitch and then I would like to think that Lasse won’t give me a minute’s peace.”
