Saman Ghoddos has been named in Iran's 2022 World Cup squad.

The versatile midfielder, who has 33 caps for Carlos Queiroz's side, will be heading to Qatar to play in the international tournament, which begins on Sunday 20 November.

Iran will play Tunisia in Doha in their final warm-up match on Wednesday, before taking on England on Monday 21 November, Wales on Friday 25 November, and USA on Tuesday 29 November in Group B.

Ghoddos featured for Iran at the 2018 World Cup and made his World Cup debut against Morocco, winning the free-kick that led to a goal, helping them to their first World Cup win in twenty years.

After our win against Manchester City, Ghoddos told Arab News: "I'll now go with a lot of energy and full of confidence, so, yeah, that's the perfect thing to take to the World Cup.

"The last World Cup I played was the biggest thing I've done in my life, my biggest football achievement.

"[In 2018], we got four points in a very difficult group, we were so close to going through and, of course, we just want to go through this time.

"It's a difficult group, but I think we have some better players, we’re more mature and we have the experience now, so we’ll bring that with us."

When asked what game he was looking forward to the most, he said: “The first game stands out, of course.

"We're playing against England, one of the best teams in the world and, for me, it's the perfect game to start with - go against the best team and try to prove ourselves and show that we're there to compete.”
