Bees fans have voted a goal by Sam Saunders as Brentford’s best of 2013.
The Football League have been seeking nominations for the Mitre Goal of the Year for 2013.
The Club asked for the help of Bees fans in deciding which of Brentford’s goals from the last 12 months should be put forward for the prize.
The Club could nominate one goal scored by The Bees in any Football League competition in the 2013 calendar year, to include goals scored in the Capital One Cup, the Football League, including Play-Offs, and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
Bees fans have been voting for their favourite goal of 2013 and the winner has been chosen.
Sam Saunders’ free kick against Swindon Town at Griffin Park on Boxing Day, December 26, received the most votes.
The Bees were 1-0 down before the goal that had a large Boxing Day crowd cheering and laughing in equal measure.
After Adam Forshaw was felled 20 yards out, Sam stepped up to take the free kick, ran up, slipped and fell flat on his face before getting anywhere near the ball.
He recovered his poise, lined it up again and curled it in to the top corner with Swindon goalkeeper Wes Foderingham rooted to the spot.
Brentford went on to win the game 3-2.
Sam’s goal narrowly beat a strike from Shaleum Logan in a 1-1 draw with Port Vale in August while goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Marcello Trotta in a 2-0 win at Crewe Alexandra in April were also popular.
Brentford’s top ten goals of 2013, chosen by the Club’s media team, can be seen on the Brentford FC YouTube channel here.
Sam’s goal has been entered in the Mitre Goal of the Year category at the Football League Awards 2014.
A judging panel will review the goals with the top ten being shown on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM on Saturday February 9.
Fans will be given the opportunity to vote for goals to make the final shortlist of five, with the overall winner being decided at the Football League Awards ceremony at The Brewery, London on Sunday March 16.
