Sam Saunders said he could not wait for Brentford’s next game to come around so The Bees could build on their unbeaten run.
A 3-1 win against Peterborough United on New Year’s Day was Brentford’s 12th win in their last 13 Sky Bet League One games.
They have taken 37 points from the last 39 available and won five out of five since Mark Warburton took over as Brentford Manager last month.
The Bees are now three points clear at the top of League One and have some time off before they play again on January 11, against Port Vale.
Sam, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the match, said the group had focussed on the five game stretch from mid-December to January 1 and set a target.
“To win five out of five was fantastic,” he said.
“We had a points target in mind and Jonathan Douglas said he wanted 15 from 15.
“We have done that.
“We keep laying down statements and have pulled out a bit of a gap.
“We can’t wait for the next game and want to kick on.
“There are a few knocks and tired bodies but we have the weekend off and will be raring to go after that.
“We can recuperate and spend time with our families and then go for the next game.”
Sam said the results said all that was needed about how the squad was performing under Mark Warburton.
He said the new Brentford boss was focussed on how his side could hurt teams and that showed in the win at London Road.
Sam was brought down for an early penalty that Adam Forshaw converted and then scored the second himself after the hosts had equalised.
Brentford had chances to wrap the game up, including a second penalty from Adam Forshaw that was saved, but eventually sealed it through Clayton Donaldson in stoppage time.
Sam, who has scored four in four, said the hard work would have to continue for The Bees as teams would now be shooting at them.
He added that while he was enjoying his current run of form he was only concerned with how the team were doing.
“The results speak volumes about how it is going,” said Sam.
“Our focus is on how we can hurt teams, we worry less about the opposition.
“I like the idea that the best form of defence is attack.
“We are causing teams problems and scoring goals.
“I have really enjoyed it and I think the whole team is.
“Today, we passed the ball well in difficult conditions, hit the post and had other chances.
“We have come to a place like Peterborough and created numerous chances.
“Long may it continue.
“The hard work begins now.
“When you are at the top everyone wants to beat you.
“No-one shirks hard graft and now we have got there we will work harder.
“I am proud to be involved.
“I am happy to be at Brentford but it is not about individuals.
“It is all about the team.
“I am getting some headlines at the moment and I have a laugh about it but I don’t care if I don’t score another goal if we get promoted.
“That’s the truth.”
The game was played at London Road in a strong wind and with rain falling on and off.
The pitch was heavy at the start and cut up as the afternoon wore on.
Sam said it played better than it looked and Brentford did not worry too much about it anyway.
“We tried to play our game,” he said.
“The pitch looks worse than it is.
“It is a bit boggy and is a bit of a slog in the middle but our mentality has changed a bit in recent weeks, we don’t care about the other team.
“We look at how we can hurt them.
“Our attacking mentality meant we came here today as favourites.
“That shows how far we have come.
“We respect our opponents but we look to hurt them.”
Sam was involved in the first three goals of the afternoon.
He was fouled by Peterborough’s goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik for Brentford’s first penalty, that Adam Forshaw scored just past the quarter hour mark, and said there was no doubt about it.
He then put his hands up that he lost Jack Payne before the Peterborough midfield player fired in a shot from 30 yards that was taken by the wind and dipped in to level things up.
But moments later he picked up a Marcello Trotta pass and curled it in from 25 yards.
“I could see the keeper out of the corner of my eye,” said Sam, talking about the penalty incident.
“I thought he was asking for trouble, he came out for no reason and left his legs there.
“The contact was inside the area.
“He took my legs as I got there first.
“Their goal was probably my fault, I gambled he would go one way, he went the other and he has hit an unbelievable strike.
“I was disappointed on a personal level, I could have done more.
“We got back in front straight away and the lads were heroes.
“Everyone dug in, the lads were grafting for each other.
“It is a pleasure to be involved in.”
Sam said he knew his goal was in as soon as he hit it.
It took his record to four goals in four games over the Christmas period.
“Marcello put a nice ball through,” said Sam.
“Adam Forshaw made a run that took the centre half away.
“That enabled me to get a shot off.
“I was looking to play Adam in but they backed off a bit further so I thought I’d have a shot.
“It fell nicely, when I hit it I felt it was going in.
“I was delighted to see the net rustle.
“I am delighted to keep the goal run going and the winning run going.”
Sam said Brentford had to “go to war” in the second half to ensure they got the win.
They had chances to seal it, including the penalty, before Clayton Donaldson scored late on.
Sam said Brentford would win and lose as a team and fight for everything.
“We had to roll our sleeves up and go to war in the second half,” he said.
“We hunted it packs and when we did that we nicked balls off them.
“It is a joy when you go to press and three or four lads go with you.
“When we lose the ball we win it back quickly.
“We win together and we lose together, if someone makes a mistake we bail them out.
“Adam has been fantastic from the spot, he missed one today.
“He said in the changing room he didn’t know where to put it and maybe I should have taken it.
“I didn’t want to get in to his head or put him off.
“Everyone misses them and he will take the next one, I’m sure.”
