Roy Hendriksen said he knows the role that will be expected of him as part of the new football management at Brentford Football Club.

Roy arrived at Brentford last week as assistant to new Head Coach Marinus Dijkhuizen.

It will be the first time the pair have worked together but Roy played with Marinus in the late 1990s at Cambuur Leeuwarden and they have known each other for more than 15 years.

Roy, 46, is a former central defender who has worked as an assistant coach for the last five years.

He said he is not afraid to speak his mind and has a different personality to Marinus, which is why he thinks the partnership will work.

“I know my role,” Roy told Bees Player last week.

“I have done it for five years at other clubs.

“This is the first time we have worked together.

“I can support Marinus.

“I am open and take decisions, I am not afraid to have discussions and I accept if the decision is different.

“I say what I think and that is the reason Marinus has taken me with him.

“We are very different.”

Roy said he was excited for Marinus when he was offered the Brentford job.

He said Brentford is known as an innovative club and one with a bright future.

Roy said coaches in Holland want to work in England.

“It was great for him,” said Roy.

“It is a great opportunity and England is the place to be.

“This is a club that is very innovative and I was excited for him to take the chance.

“We played together for three years.

“We have known each other for 15 years, we played together in the late 1990s.”

Roy said his football philosophy is similar to Marinus’, albeit as a former defender he thinks about the game in a slightly different way.

But he said he would not purely be a defensive coach.

“My philosophy is almost the same as Marinus,” said Roy.

“There are some differences because I am a defender and he is an attacker.

“Sometimes we have discussions.

“We have the same vision and want to play football the same way, if we didn’t, there would be problems.

“I am not just a defensive coach.

“My remit will be wider.”

Roy said he will be looking to get know English football, and the Sky Bet Championship, in the coming weeks.

“I have watched English football on TV,” he said.

“In the next weeks it is important to get a feeling as to what the level is.

“There are a lot of games and the first couple of months will be exciting.

“We will be watching a lot of games in the hotel.

“I don’t know exactly what the level is.”

Roy spent three years as assistant coach at RKC Waalwijk before leaving in 2014.

He spent last season as assistant trainer to Ruud Brood at NEC.

He helped the Nijmegen side win the Jupiler League, the Dutch second tier, before leaving at the end of the campaign.

Roy said the chance to work in the Championship was too good to turn down.

“Everyone in Holland wants to work in England,” he said.

“This is an interesting club, innovative, I love that.

“This is a great opportunity to work in England with a great club.

“I spoke to Ruud about it but he said this was a great opportunity with a good guy.

“This is an ambitious club and he told me to take the chance.”
