Brentford midfield player Jake Reeves said he was “very happy” to sign a new contract that will keep him at Griffin Park for a further two years.
On Monday afternoon, before he played for Brentford’s Development Squad in an Under-21 Professional Development League Two South game against Swansea City, Jake put pen to paper on the new deal.
He will remain a Brentford player until the summer of 2015.
Jake is a product of Brentford’s youth system, having completed his two-year scholarship in the summer of 2011 and turned professional.
The central midfield player captained the Youth Team in 2010/11 and made his First Team debut on the final day of that season.
He was given a two-year professional contract as part of the Club’s Development Squad but was promoted to the First Team after impressing in pre-season and made his full debut on the first day of the 2011/12 season.
Jake made 11 appearances for The Bees in 2011/12 and has made a further seven this term, as well as being named as a substitute on numerous occasions.
“I’m very happy,” said the 19-year-old, speaking to Bees Player after signing the contract.
“It is good to get my future sorted.
“I was always going to sign.
“I have been on the bench quite a lot this season, which is good.
“Everyone wants to play more but I don’t think I would have been offered a contract if the Manager [Uwe Rösler] didn’t trust me and see me as a player for the future.
“Hopefully that is what he has in store for me.”
Jake has been named in Brentford’s 18-man match day squad for the last eight games.
He said he was hoping to get some action between now and the end of the season and help The Bees clinch promotion.
Brentford are currently fourth in npower League One with games in hand on all the teams above them.
“I have been trying to get in the team every week and make something happen since I came in to the First Team set-up,” he said.
“Now we are coming to the end of the season I want to play in as many games as I can.
“We are pushing for automatic promotion and we need to win games.
“They are the ones you want to play in.
“You want to be part of it and say you helped the team go up.”
Jake was on the books of Tottenham Hotspur until the age of 16 and was spotted by former Youth Team Manager Darren Sarll and given a scholarship at Brentford.
After two years in the Youth Team he signed professional forms.
“The whole set up has changed completely since I started,” he said.
“We have fitness coaches now and get protein drinks.
“We weren’t getting that before.
“We have a proper chef now when we didn’t before.
“There has been a lot of changes and you can see that at the Training Ground.
“The canteen used to be the gym; we have a proper gym now.
“It all helps.
“Decisions on your future come down to where you think the First Team are going.
“It is definitely going in the right direction here.
“There is a new stadium coming, which will be fantastic for the Club.”
Jake played 64 minutes for Brentford’s Development Squad against Swansea.
The Bees won the game 2-1 with Farid El Alagui and Leon Redwood scoring the goals.
Brentford played three up front and played in a more direct style than normal.
Jake said the style came from First Team Manager Uwe Rösler, who wanted to see the younger players could play in the way he needed for the final weeks of the season.
“We knew Swansea would play like their First Team, passing through midfield,” said Jake.
“We wanted to press as high as we could; we knew they wouldn’t kick it in behind us.
“We wanted to press them high but when we won the ball all of their midfield and attackers were in one place.
“It was hard to pick passes.
“The longer style started from the gaffer.
“At First Team level the pitches aren’t the best at the moment in League One.
“He needs to see us play in that way.
“I thought it worked quite well considering the Development Squad don’t really play that way.
Brentford went ahead after five minutes when Farid El Alagui headed in a Charlie Adams corner.
They dominated most of the match but only added one more goal, when Leon Redwood scored 21 seconds in to the second half.
Swansea pulled one back when Rory Donnelly robbed goalkeeper Nick Hamann and slotted home.
Brentford kept control, however, and took the points.
“The longer it goes on, especially if you dominate, the more chance there is that they will nick one,” said Jake.
“They got a goal out of nothing.
“We should have cleared our lines.
“The lads did really well at the end.
“We have shown character to come from behind loads of times and also kill games off when needed.
“This group can do that.”
Brentford are fourth in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South table, one place and one point behind Queens Park Rangers, who have played a game more.
They are four points behind Charlton Athletic, who went back to the top of the table by beating Ipswich Town on Monday, and second-placed Cardiff City.
Cardiff have only one game to play – against Barnet this afternoon – and if they slip up, Brentford could secure a top two finish.
The top two will play in the Professional Development League Two play-offs against teams from the northern section to decide the overall winners.
“This is massive,” said Jake.
“The Club is pushing forward and the First Team is trying to get promotion.
“The younger lot have to stay with the First Team and do the same.
“That is what they have to do.
“They have to make the top two and are doing it very well.”
