Ivar Ingimarsson: Brentford 135 appearances, 11 goals; Reading 281 appearances, 12 goals

It wasn’t until Ivar’s third season at Griffin Park that fans began to see the undoubted talent which he possessed. After initially struggling with the pace of English football as a midfielder, Steve Coppell switched the Icelander to central defence for the 2001/02 season and there, alongside Darren Powell, he flourished. His calmness and ease on the ball saw him play every game that season, and pick up the Player of the Season prize, as The Bees were beaten in the Play-Off final at Cardiff. He left as part of a cost-cutting exercise that summer and endured a frustrating spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Reading. With The Royals he missed just three games in three seasons as Steve Coppell’s side set a points record in the Sky Bet Championship and followed that up with an eighth place finish in the Premier League. He continued to be a regular for a further four seasons before retiring in 2012.

Terry Hurlock: Brentford 265 appearances, 24 goals; Reading 33 appearances, 0 goals

Terry arrived from the non-league in 1980 and quickly became a fixture in the heart of the midfield. With his long-hair and beard, Terry was instantly recognisable to both fans and referees as his tough-tackling saw him pick up more than his share of bookings. After a spell as captain, which included leading The Bees out at Wembley in the 1985 Freight Rover Trophy, Terry joined Reading in February 1986, helping them to promotion three months later. Fondly remembered at Griffin Park Terry was voted the Players' and Supporters' Player of the Year after the 1980/81 season and, in an EFL 125th anniversary poll, was rated the fifth greatest-ever Brentford player and the club's fifth-greatest captain. He latterly helped Millwall earn promotion to Division One and did a League and Cup double in Scotland with Rangers in 1991.

Nicky Forster: Brentford 162 appearances, 48 goals; Reading 245 appearances, 68 goals

Signed from Gillingham in 1994, Nicky hit the ground running at Griffin Park, finding the net 24 times during his debut season. His performances as part of the 'FT Index' with Robert Taylor also saw him named in the PFA Second Division Team of the Year. After a lean second-season where he scored just five goals, confidence returned during the 1996/97 season as he scored ten goals in his first 25 games before a shock move to Birmingham City in January. Nicky spent two-and-a-half years at St Andrews before heading to The Madejski Stadium. His 19 goals in the 2001/02 season helped The Royals pip The Bees to promotion and he continued to be a reliable source of goals as Reading cemented their place in the second tier in subsequent years.

Bill Lane: Brentford 123 appearances, 89 goals; Reading 6 appearances, 2 goals

A one-time England prospect, Bill, pictured third from the left above, arrived at Griffin Park in 1929 after a short stint at Reading, needing to give his career a shot in the arm. The early signs were promising as he netted eight goals in his first seven games, including four in a 6-0 win against Merthyr Town, and the goals kept on coming. By the end of his debut season he had smashed the club’s goalscoring record, finding the net 33 times as The Bees won all 21 home games that season. The following season was only marginally less productive as Bill scored 29 goals in all competitions and he added a further 27 goals in his final season before being sold to raise funds for the arrivals of Jack Holliday, Bert Watson, and Billy Scott. Lane’s seven league hat-trick’s is second on the club’s all-time list behind Holliday as is his league total of 33 goals during the 1929/30 season.
