Jermaine Udumaga said he and his teammates know they have to perform better than they showed against Ipswich Town on Tuesday if they want to continue their push for first-team football at Griffin Park.

Brentford’s Development Squad made it four wins from five matches in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South with an uninspiring 1-0 victory over The Tractor Boys at Jersey Road.

With Development Squad football being primarily about performances over results Jermaine admits it isn’t good enough just to get the three points, there needs to be a good performance as well.

Speaking to Bees Player after Tuesday’s win Jermaine acknowledged that while it was nice to get the win if members of the squad want to get nearer to first-team football they need to be putting in better performances.

“We are happy that we got the win,” said Jermaine.

“We won the match but we don’t think we won the football match.

“We didn’t play good enough football compared to what we do usually.

“Our play in the final third could have been better and it could have been better all over the pitch but we are happy that we got the three points.

“We don’t want to be a team that wins but doesn’t play good football.

“We want to have the whole package of playing good football and winning and then we will be satisfied.

“Lee definitely wanted us to play better.

“He thought we could play better and we thought that as well.

“We are getting the results and we are happy about that but at the end of the day we have got to develop as players and as a team to get as close to the first-team as possible.

“We need to keep performing on the pitch to get as close as we can.”

Jermaine scored the only goal of the game just before the hour as he took down Josh Clarke’s lofted through ball, turned inside the defender and sidefooted home from close range.

That was the attacker’s fifth goal in his last six games and he is keen to keep that run going.

The Bees had a number of chances early on in the first-half to take the lead in difficult conditions, with a strong wind and heavy pitch, and Jermaine believes that had they taken one of them the performance and result could have been a lot better.

“You could blame things on the pitch and the conditions but we don’t really want to do that,” said Jermaine.

“We have to be able to deal with any conditions and any pitch really and play the way that we want to.

“We just need to keep working on it and hopefully it gets better.

“In the first-half if we could have scored the chance that Courtney Senior had straight away it could have led to us scoring quite a few goals.

“It didn’t go our way and we just had to keep trying and trying and eventually we got the goal.

“When Josh Clarke was on the ball I didn’t originally think that I was going to get there.

“I saw the space and thought I would go for it.

“I am pleased to keep scoring goals as it is a good thing.

“Scoring is probably one of the best feelings alongside winning so I don’t want to stop.

“I need to keep trying to score.”

Jermaine’s recent run of form hasn’t gone un-noticed by first-team manager Mark Warburton as he was named amongst the substitutes for The Bees 3-0 Sky Bet Championship defeat to Charlton Athletic.

The 19-year-old said he was absolutely buzzing when he found out he would be on the bench and said the whole day, despite the result, was a great experience.

Now he has had a taste of the first-team environment Jermaine said he wants to push on and get involved with the first-team more.

“I found out I was going to be on the bench the day before,” said Jermaine.

“I had a meeting with Frank McParland and Lee Carsley and they told me I was going to be on the bench.

“It was a great experience going back to Charlton Athletic as that was the first ever club I was at.

“That was a great experience and to be involved with the first-team was a big thing for me.

“That is where I want to be so I just need to keep pushing.

“I was buzzing with the news when I found out.

“I didn’t expect it so to hear that I was going to be with them made me very happy.

“It was a great experience.

“There were so many more fans and you had the adrenaline and buzz from the match.

“I now want to be on the bench more and make my debut for this club.

“The way that the club plays I think I would fit in quite well.

“I just need to keep doing what I am doing for the Development Squad and hopefully I will get there soon.”

Jermaine joined an ever-growing list of Academy graduates to make the first-team match day squad with his inclusion against Charlton Athletic.

Montell Moore, Josh Clarke, Charlie Adams, Emmanuel Oyeleke and Jake Reeves have all seen first-team action in the last 18 months.

The latest name to be added to that list, Jermaine believes it is a great motivation to see teammates involved in the first-team set-up and shows that Development Squad form will be rewarded.

“When you are at a club and you see one of the boys making their debut or making the bench it pushes you more,” said Jermaine.

“You see that if you work hard and keep playing well that you have got a chance.

“It gives you hope.

“To know that if you are doing well and that you will get your chance is a big thing.

“If I was to keep scoring but not get my chance then I would be wondering if I was doing something wrong.

“To get my chance with the first-team is a big thing for me and it shows that if I keep working hard I will get more chances.”
