The 2014/15 Football League Trust Futsal season is now in full swing. Brentford FC are represented by the Community Sports Trust Futsal BTEC Scholars (aged 16/17) who started their two-year education and performance programme last month.
They played their third set of matches last Wednesday, October 22.
Brentford FC Futsal Club entered match week three hoping to put two disappointing results and performances right when a heavy defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion A and some poor finishing cost them any chance of at least a point against Norwich B.
Brentford FC Futsal Club A 1 Chelsea A 2 (HT: 1-1)
Bees scorer: Finn
Chelsea scorers: David, Amare
Both teams had put in some hard work over the previous fortnight and first up were Brentford’s A team against an unbeaten Chelsea team.
Unusually for a West London derby this one was taking place in Barking and it was clear from the early minutes this was a Brentford team that was very focused.
Chelsea employing a high press game which had caused The Bees problems against Brighton a fortnight earlier were much more comfortable and were clearly enjoying the challenge.
Indeed it was Brentford’s Frankie Finn who with a very clinical finish put Chelsea on the back foot.
Brentford grew in confidence and the belief was apparent with the movement and rotation causing the Premier League lots of problems.
Good chances went begging from Abas Ali and Brad Scott and with just 2 minutes before half time Brentford lost their concentration when Chelsea’s Tyrele David managed to get to the dead-ball line and somehow managed to beat keeper Charlie Rose on his near post to level it up.
Chelsea played Brentford a big compliment by dropping off them at the start of the second half and trying to play on the counter-attack.
Although again enjoying some early possession The Bees couldn’t really create any clear cut chances.
This was followed by a flurry of Chelsea corners with a scramble in the centre of the penalty area finally being stabbed in by Ben Amare to put the league leaders 2-1 up.
Brentford forced their opponents onto the back foot but despite this really couldn’t produce an opportunity to get the point their performance merited.
Chelsea managed to run down the clock but the Bees know that they can now live with the top team in the division and this should give them plenty of confidence.
Bees scorers: Roseboom 2, O’Neill 2, Karim, Iqbal, Hipwell
Southend scorers: Medland
Brentford’s B team produced a workman like performance against Southend United’s B team in a one sided game as the Bees dominated possession for large amounts of the match.
The chances that Southend created were few and far between in the first half but keeper Saki Shire was there to clean up the sporadic Shrimpers attacks.
The Bees were quickly into their stride with three unanswered goals (O’Neill, Iqbal and Karim) within the first ten minutes.
Southend struggled to get any rhythm going at all and Brentford’s tempo dropped off once the lead was established.
At half time it was emphasised to the boys from TW8 that they should up the pace but it was Southend who struck back with a goal in a three-on-one attack just after the interval to reduce the lead to two.
In games like this it’s vital that the team keep trying to play futsal and not lapse into bad habits.
A time out re-focused Brentford and the normal pattern of play was re-established with a well worked free kick from man of the match Kyle O’Neill and a first goal for Alfie Hipwell to make it 5-1 with eight minutes to go.
Mason Roseboom then scored two goals in the last two minutes to put the gloss on a comprehensive Bees 7-1 win.
That win putsTthe Bees in one of the automatic spots for the end of season league play offs which has to be a realistic target for this group of players.
