There was one win and defeat for Brentford's Futsal scholars in their latest Football League Trust Futsal matches last Wednesday, May 13.

Brentford FC Futsal Club 3 Norwich City FC 2

With Norwich ‘A’ needing a huge win to overcome Brighton and Hove Albion to secure an automatic place in The FLT Futsal end of season playoffs, Brentford were expecting a tough game in the final fixture of the regular season.

Due to injuries and illnesses, Bees Head Coach, Luis Melville made a decision on Friday that there would be a tactical defensive change.

Brentford have employed a ‘high press’ for most of the season but due to the lack of personnel available and wanting to ensure that the squad could last 40 minutes, a mid-court press would be used against Norwich.

The aim was to defend less of the court but to rely heavily on counter-attacking which was the main focus of Monday’s training session.

It was Brentford who started the more confident.

With just over three minutes played it was the West Londoners who took the lead when FA Centre of Excellence squad member Brad Scott, played a pass into skipper Louis Dailey with his back to goal 15 metres out.

Dailey was able to set it perfectly for the oncoming Scott to toe poke it with such force that the Canaries' keeper had no chance as it rocketed past him.

Slowly, Norwich started to feel their way into a high quality game when Gerson Soares equalised when a ball thrown by keeper Thomas Wright caught the Bees defence out, and Soares’ alertness gave Charlie Rose no chance to react to the shot.

Parity at the interval, but it was The Bees who looked tired and with only one on the bench, mental fortitude was going to be high in the team talk.

Midway through the second half, Luke Holland’s left footed thunderbolt from 15 metres was seen very late by Rose due to two players blocking his view and suddenly Brentford were looking very vulnerable at 2-1 down.

The Bees took an immediate time out to get some key messages about staying in the game and remaining focused.

With four minutes to go, Harman Sandhu’s kick in from the half way line went back to Charlie Rose in goal who played it to Azhan Iqbal to the right of the six-metre area.

He drove forward on a diagonal run into the Norwich half.

Harman Sandhu found himself on the right hand of the court about ten metres from goal when Iqbal picked him out with a disguised pass which Sandhu hit first time into the top left hand corner with the keeper left helpless.

75 seconds later, Brentford were in the lead, 3-2, when a similar run by Iqbal found Dailey unmarked where Sandhu had previously scored.

Dailey’s shot was blocked but after a scramble he got the rebound which sealed the points.

The Bees survived a late shot against the post in a marvellous game of Futsal.

Azhan Iqbal was awarded Man of The Match.

The Bees finished the league season with a record of seven wins, two draws and five losses.

They scored 57 goals and conceded 37. Frankie Finn top scored with 13 goals.

Brentford ‘B’ 1 Brighton ‘B’ 2

The Bees ‘B’ team can consider themselves unfortunate not to go away with a share of the points in a scrappy game of Futsal.

Brentford using a similar game plan to the ‘A’ team starting off well but missed an early chance when Mason Roseboom couldn’t quite finish off an excellent move started in the Bees own half.

It was Brighton who took the lead, with Man of The Match Bradley Tighe scoring the opener for The Seagulls after Abas Ali was dispossessed on the half way line and the resulting shot beat Saki Shire in goal.

Shire was to have an excellent game despite the loss and made five outstanding saves.

With the half time talk concentrating on staying in the game, it was The Bees who scored a superb team goal.

Roseboom played a cross-court pass to Kyle O’Neill who was on the right hand side of the court.

Roseboom continued his run on the blind-side with O’Neill sending a ball towards the penalty area, taking out the whole of the Seagulls defence with a first-time finish which totally fooled Brighton’s keeper to level the score for Brentford.

Despite having several good chances it was Brighton who secured the points when a pass was intercepted and Tighe scored his second.

The Bees ‘B’ team have one game left to play on a fortnight against Chelsea.

Brentford FC Futsal Club will be holding trials for their next group of Futsal BTEC Scholars on Tuesday May 26 2015.
