Brentford Women’s B team defender Olivia Thick says the side will push on next season following a disappointing ending to the 2022/23 campaign.

The Bees were beat 3-0 by Leyton Orient at Bedfont Sports Club on Wednesday evening but have plenty to be proud of in what was a campaign where they battled right until the end for the league title but just missed out.

Speaking on the defeat, Thick said: “Everyone is gutted that we ended the season like that, coming into the game we were determined to end the campaign on a high but it just wasn’t meant to be.

“We had a massive win against Luton on Sunday so going into the game we were ready but it just wasn’t our day, we did a lot of things well on the pitch but it was just in the final third where we struggled to create anything.

“Fair play to Leyton Orient they did well on the day but we will go again next season and hopefully see them in the Premier Division soon.”

With Leyton Orient unbeaten in the league coming into the match and having snatched the title from the Bees a few weeks before, Brentford were keen to get their own back.

The Brentford number four came on as a substitute vs Leyton Orient

Thick went on to explain how much she and her teammates wanted to hand Orient their only defeat of the season before they were promoted.

“The whole season it was us vs them for the title, I know we used to look at their results to see how they were getting on as we knew it would be close and I’m sure it was the same for them also,” said Thick.

“I think we prepared in the best way possible we were training hard for this game but just wasn’t clinical enough.”

Thick was one of eight players who joined the women’s B team at the start of the season as head coach Tommy Ryan-Maynard looked to freshen up his side in hopes of claiming the league title.

The Brentford number four had a tricky start to her career at the club after picking up an early injury which ruled her out for months but since her return to the side, she has shown excellent commitment.

Talking on her first season at Brentford, Thick explained: “It’s not been the easiest season for myself, I got injured in the first game of pre-season and only recovered towards the back end of February, so it’s been frustrating but since I’ve returned it’s been great.

“Tommy and Charlotte (Tanner) have been great they were constantly be checking up on me during my injury and since I’ve come back they have helped me develop as a player which has helped me so much.”

The defender went on to express how excited she is to start fresh next season and believes her side will go again as they hunt for promotion.

“We had the heartbreak of the cup final and obviously not clinching the league this year so I think it will make us more determined than ever to bounce back next season.

“We’ll be working hard during pre-season and aim for a quick start to the new campaign and I hope at the end of next season we will be celebrating promotion.”
