Brentford players will be heading off to represent their countries in the coming days, but Pontus Jansson will not be among them. The Brentford captain announced earlier this month that he had made one of his "toughest decisions" to step aside from international football.  As he outlined in an Instagram post.

Pontus said: "I have always felt an incredible honour to be part of the Swedish national team. I've always felt pride to give 100 per cent every time I have had a chance to represent my country. Now I feel it is someone else's time to get that honour.

"I want to dedicate my time to club football and my family. I want to send the biggest thank you to the players, leaders and people around the national team. Thank you for everything. It is one of my toughest decisions but it is time to hand over a place to someone else."

Pontus played for Sweden 27 times, earning five of those caps while at Brentford. He also played for his country at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level. He was part of the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and played in the Quarter Final defeat to England as well as being part of the squads for UEFA European Championships in 2016 and the delayed 2020 event that finished a few weeks ago.
