Nik Tzanev played his part as New Zealand picked up a win that is set to see their FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign extend for at least one more match.
New Zealand faced Myanmar in a make-or-break match in the tournament this morning, Friday 5 June.
Nik, 18, was selected to play in goal for the match, earning his chance after being an unused substitute for the first two matches - a 0-0 draw against Ukraine last Saturday, 30 May, and a 4-0 loss to USA on Tuesday, 2 June.
Myanmar took the lead in the first half as Aung Thu gave Nik no chance with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Nik made a few vital saves and New Zealand came back.
They led 2-1 at half time and eventually recorded a 5-1 victory, their first in the Under-20 World Cup.
New Zealand, who are hosting the event, finished third in Group A with four points from three games.
The four best third-placed teams will make the knock-out stages of the competition, which will be played next week.
New Zealand have a better record than Argentina, the third-place team in Group B, and need a series of results to go against them for them not to qualify.
They will learn their fate over the next two days.
The Myanmar match was Nik’s second Under-20 cap.
