Brentford B Head Coach Neil MacFarlane was proud of the character that his side displayed as they netted late on to beat Jong AZ 2-1 in Holland on Saturday.
Charlie Farr scored on 88 minutes to give the side the victory following an equaliser from the Dutch team a few minutes before.
Reflecting on the result, MacFarlane explained: “I am so thrilled for the group. Coming across here for two outstanding games against PSV and AZ Alkmaar. They are two very technical sides and they test you out of possession, but to a man I thought we were exceptional. We were better with the ball than against PSV and we have to keep getting better at that all the time, but I’ve seen improvements in the last few months and today. It leaves us in a really good place to go back to Jersey Road on the back of what has been a brilliant week.”
Comparing the two tests in Holland, after the side drew 1-1 with Jong PSV on Wednesday, MacFarlane said his team have learned and reacted well to conceding an equaliser late in the game brilliantly as Tony Yogane laid the ball on for Farr’s winner.
He continued: “I felt in the first half we had more of the ball than against PSV. They dominated the first 30 minutes whereas today we had a lot more of the ball but we probably needed to be a bit more patient in certain moments to suck them out of their positions to then get through them. We did that at the start of the second half but also again our high press at the start of the second half and beyond which gave us opportunities to take the game away from them. We weren’t clinical enough to get the second and then the third which was similar to the game on Wednesday where we lost a goal in a similar position after defending throughout the game so well. We learned from the game the other day, which is important. We didn’t put ourselves under more pressure where we could have conceded another goal like could have happened against PSV. This time we went right back on the front foot, and we scored a terrific goal where we stole it, Tony plays in Charlie, and it’s an outstanding finish from him."
Discussing Farr’s performance from right back, MacFarlane is pleased for him as he netted his first goal for the Club with real composure.
“It’s outstanding for Charlie,” said the B team Head Coach. “He has come into the group this season on the back of having a really tough spell individually having been out injured for a really long time. He, like the rest of the players in the dressing room, has an unbelievable character and we saw that towards the end of the game. We’ve had unbelievable momentum over the past few months, we’ve played some terrific football and I’m enjoying watching them and so are the staff.”
The young Bees now return to Jersey Road to focus on their final few fixtures before their Christmas break and they have key games coming up in the Premier League Cup. MacFarlane believes two brilliant games against high level opponents on tour will serve his side well going forwards.
He said: “We’ve had two good training sessions in between the games, the facilities are magnificent. We’ve had two really tough matches against two brilliant football clubs who really develop young players. We’re in a good place with the group that we’ve got at the moment and we’ll keep looking to get better as always.”
