Brentford B Head Coach Neil MacFarlane hailed his side’s second half display as they put in a ruthless showing as they claimed a 5-1 win over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
The sides went into the break level at 1-1 after Ryan Trevitt cancelled out an earlier Crewe strike, but the Bees put in a scintillating display in the second 45 minutes as Trevitt grabbed one more, Alex Gilbert added two, whilst Max Dickov also found the net from the bench.
Reflecting on the display, the B Team Head Coach said: “I thought in the first half we had more possession and it was still a really tight game. We didn’t quite make the final pass in the final moment in the first half. We fell behind but the response, once again, as has been in recent months, we got back in to get level at half-time. The second half was some of the best football we’ve played all season.
“It was breath-taking at times, the passing and the positions that we took up. The weight of pass to get players into the right positions, we found them with the right ball and there were some outstanding finishes. It was really entertaining in the second half and I’m thrilled for the group.”
On falling behind, Neil was pleased with the side’s reaction as they scored moments after the Crewe goal late in the first half.
He continued: “It’s disappointing to lose the goal and it’s one we could have probably avoided because we can’t let them turn on the edge of our box and get a free hit. We got right back on it immediately and equalised through Trev (Ryan Trevitt) and it was a top ball from Tristan (Crama) over the top. We deserved that but we certainly raised our levels in the second half."
With Alex Gilbert and Ryan Trevitt both grabbing two goals each, Neil was pleased to see the players impress to a high level. “They’ve been together for a while. Alex played a slightly different position today and he adds so much quality to the team,” explained Neil.
“Trev is having an unbelievable season and long may that continue. He’s chipped in with assists and goals today. Yehor (Yarmoliuk) also did well today and created some good moments. We defended well too, so I’m really thrilled with the way we played. We’re obviously focusing on the performances all the time. Everybody contributed, not just the starters but all the players who came off the bench and even when we tweaked the system to go 3-4-3 I thought we were good.”
