Nathan Fox admitted that his injury couldn’t have come at a worse time as he returned after two months out with a pulled quadricep muscle. The defender joined The Bees from Cray Wanderers in January but managed just one substitute appearance before picking up the injury. After two late cameos in recent weeks Nathan finally made his first Brentford start in Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Barnsley.

The 19-year-old defender said he wants to ease himself back in ahead of the summer break and hit the ground running again in pre-season. “I joined and then came on against Colchester United for the last 20 minutes before I pulled my quad,” said Nathan. “It was hard to get back into things to start with but now that I am settled it will be fine. It was so frustrating because I have never been injured before in my life. I got what I wanted by coming here, the injury set me back and I had to restart all over again. I am looking for minutes between now and the end of the season. I want to get the season done and win the last few games.”

The former Norwich City youngster’s return coincided with the Development Squad’s first win of 2016. Bradley Clayton scored twice in the first-half, Nathan added his first for the club on the hour, and Herson Alves sublime curling finished wrapped up the points ten minutes later.

“The boys are buzzing in the dressing room with the win after losing a couple of games,” said Nathan. “I think that we dominated them. We could have been three or four up at half-time. Their first goal was my fault. I should have just shot and if it had gone over the bar it would have been better than them scoring. We needed to dig deep and not let them get back into it.”

Nathan was used mainly as a centre-back in his younger days but has moved to right-back in Flemming Pedersen’s Under-21 squad. The Essex-born defender admits he is still getting used to his new position but added that it was really pleasing to get off the mark with his first goal for the club.

“I looked to put the cross in but I have hit it sweetly and the keeper was caught off guard,” said Nathan. “Playing at right-back is a new thing for me. At Brentford you play at right-back but you are more attacking. Getting forward is a key thing for me and I enjoy doing it. The midfielders that we have got like James Ferry and Reece Cole will find me with a longer pass so it is key for me to get forward.”
