Supporters and corporate partners were among over 600 guests that helped Brentford Football Club celebrate a special milestone with some of the top names in English football last week.
The Brentford Football Club 125 Year Anniversary Dinner was held at The Hurlingham Club last Thursday, November 20.
The dinner was the biggest in the Club’s history and Bees fans attended in their hundreds along with some of the best known faces in football.
England Manager Roy Hodgson and Independent FA Chairman Greg Dyke were joined by Football League Chairman Greg Clarke and Chief Executive Shaun Harvey at the event.
Former Brentford star – and now one of the best known faces on Sky Sports – Chris Kamara talked about his life on Sky’s Soccer Saturday programme while Coronation Street star Bradley Walsh, who was on the books at Brentford in the late 1970s and early 1980s without playing a First Team match, also entertained the crowd.
Five Brentford legends were inducted in to the Club’s Hall of Fame – Bob Booker, Peter Gelson, Keith Millen, Alan Nelmes and Danis Salman – while Terry Evans, Jackie Graham, Alan Hawley and Bobby Ross, who have already been inducted, were there to celebrate the milestone.
Brentford Manager Mark Warburton, Assistant Manager David Weir, Academy Director Ose Aibangee and Club Captain Kevin O’Connor were present to talk to supporters and guests.
There were speeches from Greg Dyke, Brentford FC Chairman Cliff Crown and Chief Executive Mark Devlin, an auction and a £20 draw to win a holiday in Vietnam, which was part of the fund-raising efforts for Brentford Football Club Community Sports Trust.
All profit from the night will be donated to the Trust, a charitable trust supported by the Club which provides sport, education and career opportunities in the area.
The evening was hosted by Natalie Sawyer, one of the best known faces on Sky Sports News HQ and a regular presenter of Sky’s Football League coverage.
Mark Devlin said: “Including the auction item and the £20 note draw, in excess of £20,000 was taken.
“Our guests were very generous and supportive, we are grateful to everyone who came.
“I would like to thank all those that gave up their time – Greg Dyke, Roy Hodgson, Greg Clarke and Shaun Harvey, Chris Kamara, Bradley Walsh and Pat Jennings among others – to be with us.
“Particularly in the case of Roy Hodgson as it came 48 hours after England’s win in Scotland and the demands on his time over the previous week would have been great.
“The fans enjoyed meeting the England Manager and he was very happy to talk and have pictures taken.
“It is great that we could get people of the calibre of Bradley Walsh and Chris Kamara and that they have a Brentford connection.
“I would like to especially thank Natalie Sawyer, who did a fantastic job.
“It was clear that Chris, Bradley and Natalie have a clear love for the Club and it has made an impression on them.”
Mark contunued: “We wanted to find a venue with the right stature to befit the Club’s 125th anniversary.
“Unfortunately, there was nowhere in Brentford able to cater for 500 guests, which was our initial target.
“The Hurlingham Club is a fantastic venue and the food and facilities were fitting for such a night.
“We exceeded our target in terms of guests and it gave us a chance to attract supporters and corporate partners.
“Importantly, It gave us a platform to talk about where the Club is heading, our aspirations and to further highlight the wonderful work of the BFC Community Sports Trust.
“It also gave us the chance to invite some of our Brentford legends and induct a further five into the Hall of Fame.
“That was a very important part of the evening.
Mark added: “I would like to thank Mike Sullivan, Lee Doyle, Chris Gammon, Brian Burgess, Shinead Davis and Jan Riley for their work in finding the venue, attracting guests and for providing an evening to remember.”
Pictures from the night can be seen here, here and here and there will be a video recap following later this week.
