Our new home starts to become our new home
After 116 years at Griffin Park, the move to our new home became official when Oxford United headed to the Brentford Community Stadium for a friendly in early September. Thomas Frank's men beat the Sky Bet League One side 2-1 with Sergi Canos writing his name into the history books with the first goals at our new stadium.
One striker in, one striker out
Moves were also being made in the forward line at Brentford. Ivan Toney arrived on 31 August, fresh from hitting 26 goals in 39 games for Peterborough United the previous season, while last season's top scorer Ollie Watkins went the other way a week later, joining Aston Villa for a Championship record fee.
One win, one defeat to start
Just 39 days after the Play-Off Final defeat to Fulham, we were back in Sky Bet Championship action away at Birmingham on 12 September. It wasn't the winning start we had hoped for, Jeremy Bela heading home the only goal eight minutes before the break to give the home side the win. We did get the season up and running in style a week later with a fine 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town, our first league points at our new home.
Carabao Cup run takes Premier League casualties
The first competitive game at our new home had seen Wycombe Wanderers defeated on penalties in the Carabao Cup, setting up a Second Round trip to Southampton. On a sweltering night at St Mary's, goals from Christian Norgaard, who a fortnight earlier had signed a new long-term contract, and Josh Dasilva saw off The Saints. A week later it was West Bromwich Albion who stood in our way of a place in the Last 16. A game of spot-kicks at The Hawthorns saw three converted in normal time before we eventually ran out 5-4 winners in the shootout. The only goal not coming from the spot was Emiliano's incredible acrobatic effort. The prize in Round Four was a visit from Fulham.
Ivan up and running
After four goalless outings to begin the campaign, Ivan Toney registered his first goal in the red and white of Brentford at Millwall late in the month. With his trademark confidence, Ivan dispatched a penalty into the bottom corner as we took a point from our trip to The Den.
