Kevin Schade scored a hat-trick as a Brentford XI beat their counterparts from Brighton and Hove Albion 4-1 at the Robert Rowan Performance Centre.

The young forward swept home Mads Roerslev’s low centre for the opener after 12 minutes before doubling the Bees’ advantage with a clinical finish late on in the half. Brighton capitalised on an error in possession from Ji-soo Kim to halve the arrears shortly after the restart, but Brentford eased to victory in the closing stages.

A low Shandon Baptiste centre was turned into his own net by a Brighton defender 14 minutes from time. That goal came on the back of a Schade penalty miss but he wouldn’t be denied his hat-trick, finishing off a flowing move with a low left-footed shot in the closing stages.

Zanka, Roerslev, Baptiste and Schade all started less than 24 hours after coming on against Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s Premier League opener while Thomas Strakosha, Yehor Yarmoliuk, Josh Dasilva and Keane Lewis-Potter also featured from the off, having been in the matchday squad at Gtech Community Stadium.

Lewis-Potter had the afternoon’s first effort - his low shot beaten away at the near post – and the opener arrived shortly after. Roerslev pulled the ball back from the right and Schade got across his man at the front post to sweep home from inside the six-yard box.

Lewis-Potter dragged another shot wide and had a free-kick blocked by the wall before he almost inadvertently brought Brighton level. Having tracked back, the winger couldn’t get out of the way of a low Brighton cross with Strakosha reacting well to tip over as the ball looped towards goal.

Back at the right end, Lewis-Potter was involved in the move for Brentford’s second. He was the intended recipient of Schade’s through ball which landed back at the German’s feet on the edge of the box. The striker took a touch to set himself and then poked into the corner from 15 yards with the outside of his right foot.

After the restart, Strakosha made a full-length save to turn away an effort from the edge of the box but was powerless to stop Brighton pulling one back on the hour. Ji-soo lost the ball just outside the area with a Brighton player picking it up and firing home.

The Bees finished the game strongly. Michael Olakigbe’s dipping cross was turned away from under his crossbar by the away keeper before Schade was handed a chance to complete his hat-trick when Baptiste was upended by the Brighton stopper.

However, Schade’s effort from the spot was saved and he couldn’t force the rebound home from a tight angle.

Olakigbe was also twice denied at close range but there was no stopping Brentford’s third as Baptiste’s low cross cannoned off a Brighton leg at close range and flew in.

It was left to Schade to complete the scoring with the pick of the afternoon’s goals. Ethan Brierley and Olakgibe exchanged passes deep in the Brentford half, with the winger spinning his man to run into space down the right. Schade found him with a first-time ball and then raced into the box to collect the low cross, turn and roll into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
