Wycombe Wanderers vs Brentford
Pre-Season Friendly
Adams Park
Kick-off 7.45pm
The Opposition
Gareth Ainsworth's Chairboys are preparing for life back in the third tier following automatic promotion last season. Wanderers lost just three times in 2018 as they stormed to a third-placed finish in Sky Bet League Two, ending a six-year stay in the basement division.
So far this summer, Ainsworth has kept his powder dry in the transfer market bringing in just three players. One of those, Darius Charles, who made 42 appearances in four years at Griffin Park, joins a strong contingent of former Bees at Adams Park which includes Sam Saunders and Marcus Bean.
Team News
Chris Mepham will be absent this evening due to a shoulder picked up during last week's Training Camp in Germany. John Egan, Florian Jozefzoon, Rico Henry, and Justin Shaibu also missed Saturday's defeat to Karlsruher SC through injury while Saïd Benrahma is still awaiting international clearance to feature for The Bees.
The Manager
Following a distinguished playing career at all four levels of English football with Preston, Wimbledon and QPR, Ainsworth began his coaching career with Wycombe in 2011, having earned legendary status in his final years as a player. The former QPR caretaker boss was handed the reins at Adams Park in September that year and steered the club away from relegation before hanging up his boots after his 600th career appearance against Port Vale.
Despite financial restraints, Ainsworth successfully kept Wanderers in the EFL the following season before guiding The Chairboys to the Play-Off final 12 months later. After 13th and 9th placed finishes, the 45-year-old clinched his first promotion as a manager in April and is currently the second longest serving manager in the top four divisions.
