Rotherham United vs Brentford

Saturday 20 August The New York Stadium Sky Bet Championship Kick-off: 3pm

The Opponents

Written off as relegation certainties before a ball was kicked this season, The Millers have taken one point from a tough opening to the new campaign. 2-0 up inside 20 minutes at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day, things looked to be going well for Alan Stubbs side but Wolves fought back to grab a point after goals from George Saville and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. Morecambe got the better of a nine goal thriller in the EFL Cup First Round three days later before a pair of 3-0 defeats at Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion have, this week, left Alan Stubbs side in 22nd place.

It has been an extraordinary summer of comings and goings at The New York Stadium as Stubbs looks to assemble his team following Neil Warnock's departure in May. Former Bee Tom Adeyemi joined from Cardiff City on Thursday to become the 11th new face at Rotherham. Jon Taylor [Peterborough United], Kelvin Wilson [Nottingham Forest], Will Vaulks [Falkirk], Lewis Price [Sheffield Wednesday], Anthony Forde [Walsall], Dominic Ball [Tottenham Hotspur], and Darnell Fisher [Celtic] all joined on permanent deals ahead of the new campaign with Isaiah Brown [Chelsea], Jake Forster-Caskey [Brighton and Hove Albion], and Scott Allen [Celtic] signed on a temporary basis. The summer clearout saw 13 players leave, all either released or on free transfers, including Paddy Kenny [Northampton Town], Emmanuel Ledesma [Brentford], Leon Best and Danny Collins [Unattached], and Matt Derbyshire [Omonia Nikosia].

The Gaffer

An accomplished defender in his playing days, Alan Stubbs made his name with Bolton Wanderers in the early 1990s as The Trotters went from Division Two to the Premier League. Following their relegation in 1996, Stubbs moved north of the border to Celtic where he won two league titles and two league cups. Stubbs was diagnosed with testicular cancer in May 1999 and suffered a relapse a year later before recovering to pick up a league winner's medal the following May. He left Celtic Park that summer to return closer to home with Everton where he spent four successful years, culminating in a Fourth Placed finish and Championship League qualification in 2005. After a troubled spell at Sunderland, Stubbs returned to Goodison Park before ending his career at Derby County in 2008, having made nearly 500 professional league appearances.

Stubbs spent nearly six years as a coach at Everton before taking the Hibernian job in June 2014. In his first season, Hibs lost out in the Premiership Play-Off Semi-Final to Rangers, after finishing second, and also reached the Scottish Cup semi-final. Last season he took Hibs one step further as they picked up their first Scottish cup title in 114 years before joining The Millers on 1 June.
