The Opponents

Safety for David Wagner's side was never really in doubt last season despite The Terriers spending much of 2016 in the lower reaches of the Sky Bet Championship table, unable to string together a consistent run of results. However, the mood around the John Smith's Stadium is buoyant ahead of the new season after a summer of unprecedented spending in West Yorkshire. No fewer than a dozen players have been signed as Wagner puts his stamp on things in his first full season in charge. The Terriers paid a club record fee for defender Christopher Schindler from 1860 Munich with Chris Lowe [1. FC Kaiserslautern], Jack Payne [Southend United], Danny Ward [Liverpool], Aaron Mooy [Manchester City], and Kasey Palmer [Chelsea] among the other new faces to get the pulses racing. The only major departures were Joel Lynch, who swapped blue and white stripes for blue and white hoops as he joined Queens Park Rangers, and James Vaughan who moved south to Birmingham City. The Terriers have sold more than 15,000 season tickets for the upcoming campaign and tomorrow's crowd is expected to be the biggest opening day crowd at the John Smith's Stadium and Town's biggest attendance on the opening day since 1970.

The Gaffer

David Wagner has been Head Coach of Huddersfield Town since early November, taking over from former boss Chris Powell. The 44-year-old previously worked under Jürgen Klopp at Borussia Dormund, alongside his assistant Christoph Bühler, where they were in charge of BVB’s second squad.

Wagner played professionally as a striker in his native Germany, lining up for Mainz 05 and Schalke 04 throughout the 1990s. Eligible due to his American father, he represented the United States at international level.
