Five days after their last match, Brentford B are on the road again to the North West. They face last season's Premier League 2 champions at noon on Tuesday.

The Opposition

Everton U23 were crowned champions of Premier League 2's Division One in April, finishing three points ahead of Manchester City. 17,000 fans filled Goodison Park to see David Unsworth's squad lift the trophy a month later.

The Blues won 15 of their 22 fixtures last season, the highest win rate in the top division. The Bees are their final pre-season friendly before league action begins. They begin the defence of their title on Friday 11 August with a trip to newly promoted West Ham United.

This season will be the team's second year as an Academy in the Checkatrade Trophy. In the 2016/17 campaign, they were knocked out in the Group Stage.

The Boss

Former Blues players David Unsworth and John Ebbrell are the duo at the head of the Everton U23 squad.Unsworth, the Head Coach, made over 300 appearances for the First Team, where he was also a part of their FA Cup winning squad of 1995. A defender who quickly earned a reputation for his no-nonsense style, Unsworth also played top flight football for West Ham United, Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic. For a few brief spells between 2010 and 2012, he was caretaker manager of Preston North End. He returned to Everton in 2013 as assistant U21 coach to Alan Stubbs. In 2014, he took the hot seat after Stubbs moved to Hibernian FC.Ebbrell started his career with Everton before moving to Sheffield United in 1997. His time as a player was cut short by an ankle injury that forced him into early retirement just two years after he signed for The Blades. His post-playing days started when he became a scout under David Moyes. He took a brief break from the game to start a football agency but soon returned as a coach of Tranmere Rovers. In 2015, he took up a job with the Everton Academy.
