Brentford vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
Tuesday 14 March Griffin Park Sky Bet Championship Kick-off: 7.45pm
The Opponents
You'd have to go a long way to find a win which did less to ease the concerns of a side's fans than Wolves victory over Rotherham United did on Saturday. After six defeats in seven in all competitions, Wolves made heavy weather of the League One bound Millers at Molineux, Andi Weimann scoring the only goal in first-half injury time, to stay just a point above the Sky Bet Championship drop zone albeit with games in hand.
After a promising start to the season under Walter Zenga things turned sour as the weather turned colder. One points from five games saw an end to Zenga's reign in October, Paul Lambert the man to replace him. Lambert's tensure started slowly but eventually Wolves looked to have turned a corner, winning seven of their 12 games in all competitions in December and January. Along the way Stoke City and Liverpool were both dispatched away from home in the Emirates FA Cup. However, February brought about five straight defeats, including a 2-0 FA Cup exit at home to Chelsea to leave those in old-gold looking nervously over their shoulders.
Saturday's match-winner Weimann was one of only two January additions, Ben Marshall also arrived from Blackburn Rovers, as Lambert has kept faith with the bulk of the squad he inherited from Zenga.
The Gaffer
Molineux became Paul Lambert's third port of call in 18 months when he arrived in the West Midlands last October. The Scot left Blackburn Rovers in June 2016 after a seven month stint at Ewood Park having been at Aston Villa for nearly three years prior to that. His early management career included time at Livingston, Wycombe Wanderers and Colchester United. His best period as a manager was with Norwich City, a team he guided to successive promotions from League One to the top flight between 2009 and 2011.
The Scottish former midfielder won several honours in his playing days, from domestic titles with Celtic to the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund. Capped 40 times at international level, he played every minute of Scotland’s 1998 World Cup campaign.
