THE OPPOSITION
Things were looking bleak for Reading at the start of the month but September has been much better for The Royals. Before the international weekend, Reading took just two points from six games and their only win was against Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup. Even that was followed up by a loss to Watford in the following round.
But Reading returned from the international week with a win at Preston North End and beat Hull City last Saturday. Those wins did come either side of a home loss to Norwich City and The Royals are only two points and two places outside the relegation zone. This is Reading's sixth consecutive season in the Championship, and the last five have been up and down to say the least.
Reading are a team that don't often live up to what's expected of them, positively or negatively. Last season, the squad were hoping to push on from a third place finish the previous year. But they could only managed to scrape 20th. In similar fashion, the 2013/14 season ended with them in seveth place - a good platform to improve and push for the next step. However, next year the 2014/15 campaign landed them 19th spot. They will be hoping to defy expectations, and early form, again.
TEAM NEWS
Brentford made seven changes for the Carabao Cup loss to Arsenal after defeat to Derby County last weekend. Moses Odubajo will be pushing for a first league start since return after playing 60 minutes at The Emirates Stadium while goal scorer Alan Judge also pressed his claims. Rico Henry and Emiliano Marcondes are still out injured and Josh Clarke has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury.
Reading had a midweek without a game so could prepare for their trip to Griffin Park all week. They will be without John O'Shea, who was sent off in the win over Hull and Paul McShane could return from injury and step in. Vito Mannone may be fit enough to return in goal and Mo Barrow is pushing for a spot in midfield.
THE MANAGER
Paul Clement brings a mountain of experience with him wherever he goes. The 46-year-old has been around the block when it comes to top level teams and top level trophies.
Largely due to his association with Carlo Ancelotti, Clement has several honours to his name including the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid in 2014 and Premier League with Chelsea in 2010.
Now working solo as a Head Coach in his own right, he has yet to translate his top level knowledge into a top level team. Spending just a year with Derby County and Swansea City, he couldn't do much about their situations and will be hoping to make a mark at Reading, where he took over in March after the departure of Jaap Stam.
