Brentford Manager Mark Warburton praised his players for their “outstanding” achievements during the 2013/14 season.

The Bees brought their campaign to a close with a 2-0 win over Stevenage at Griffin Park yesterday.

Stuart Dallas and Alan Judge scored second half goals to give Brentford the win.

It took them to 94 points, a Club Record, and ended a season that has seen The Bees finish second in Sky Bet League One and clinch promotion to The Championship.

Promotion, which Mark described as an important step for the Club – which is set to move in to a new stadium in the next few years, comes a year after Brentford finished third in League One and lost in the Play-Off Final.

Speaking after a day of celebration at Griffin Park, which had seen the squad pick up medals and a trophy for their achievements, Mark said it was important that everyone enjoyed the moment.

“For the supporters, for the owner, for the board – with a new stadium coming – it was a very important step for us to take,” said the Brentford boss.

“I am delighted the players showed the character to bounce back from last year.

“They were absolutely outstanding.

“I am delighted for the players.

“They had a heavy disappointment last season and to respond in this fashion is magnificent.

“The players earned the celebrations today.

“They are a great group of professionals and it has been an outstanding season, getting to 94 points.

“The supporters all stayed and it is important that all parties enjoy a day like today.”

Mark looked back to the last time Brentford had played Stevenage.

The Bees were beaten 2-1 in Hertfordshire in October, a fourth loss in five games.

After the match former boss Uwe Rösler, the back room staff and players had a lengthy conversation and exchange of views.

Mark, who was Sporting Director at the time before taking the job of Brentford Manager in December, said it was an important day.

Brentford were in mid-table at the time but lost only four of their remaining 36 matches to climb the table and win promotion.

“I was on the phone after that game,” said Mark.

“It was an important day, for many reasons.

“Uwe and I had a deep discussion after that.

“We started a magnificent run from that point and I am delighted the boys maintained it.

“It gave them great confidence and shifted them up the table.”

Brentford ended their season with a 2-0 win.

Stuart Dallas put The Bees ahead inside the last 15 minutes and Alan Judge scored a second late on.

Mark said the players wanted to get back to their high standards after dropping below them in losing to Colchester United last week.

He said The Bees did not penetrate in the first half but showed more urgency after the break and showed what they could do.

“Today wasn’t about Stevenage, it was about us,” said Mark.

“No-one was more angry than the players after last week.

“It was important they got back to their standards.

“We were nice on the ball in the first half but didn’t probe or penetrate.

“Neither keeper had a shot to save.

“We had more urgency, more tempo and more desire in the second half, played higher up the pitch.

“We were good and ran out deserved winners.

“It was difficult today, the main goal has been achieved and there was lots going on.

“We had to step up our tempo.

“They showed what they could do in the second half.

“The players have been outstanding this season.”

Club Captain Kevin O’Connor came on in the first half to make his 500th Brentford appearance.

He became only the fourth man in the Club’s history to hit that landmark.

“I am so pleased for Kevin,” said Mark.

“He would be the first to say it wasn’t about him, he wanted the three points.

“The players get their credit today but we must recognise Kev’s achievement.

“He has seen so many changes and people like Kevin that feel for the Club have a big role to play.

“I was delighted for him today.”

Mark also looked ahead to 2014/15.

He said he had spoken to out-of-contract striker Clayton Donaldson and believed the Brentford top scorer was happy.

Mark said he knew Clayton Donaldson wanted to play at the highest level possible and hoped he would stay at Brentford to play Championship football.

Mark added he would be in discussion with the parent clubs of loan players Alan Judge, George Saville and Marcello Trotta in the coming days and felt it would be disrespectful to talk about potential deals in the media.

The Brentford Manager added the squad would not let the fans down next season.

“We are disappointed as a group with 94 points, that tells you something,” said Mark.

“We will add value to the squad and quality.

“We have a good squad with quality senior professionals and good young talent.

“We will be OK and won’t let the fans down next season.”
